VBAC

Does the term "trial of labor" bother anyone else?

First, I just want to say this isn't directed at the pp who posted about a TOL... But more at doctors that use the term.

Does it make anyone else feel like the doctor is just waiting or you to fail so they can rush you into a c/s?  It's not like this is used for women without a previous c/s who plan a vaginal birth and have to have an emergency c/s, so why with VBACs?  Wouldn't everyone who isn't having a planned c/s technically be having a trial of labor then?  Sorry, I know it's trivial, but it really gets on my nerves!

  • yeah actually it bugs me. Makes me think of being tested for physical fittness in PE class. I never could do the pull ups. Does that mean I will fail this "test of womanhood?"

Trail of labor... they just have to have a term for it, thats all. But it still bugs me.

  • Not really actually. I think most laboring woman in a hospital are looked upon this way , meaning their labor needs to meet predetermined criteria, even though the term is not verbalized. At least with a VBAC the term is used openly. I think the c-section rate reflects this thinking.

  • I can understand in the hospital, but if my practitioner ever said that to me it doesn't feel right.  Hence why I left my first practice for a new one at 25w.  I felt like trial of labor also feels like they are doing me a favor by letting me try.  I know it's a medical term, but like I said, it was never used with my midwife.  It was called "labor".  This might be an extreme example and I'm sorry if I offend anybody, but it's kind of how a m/c could be called "products of conception", but that doesn't mean that a doctor/midwife should say that to a patient.

  • My doctor never used the term. They gave me a link to a video about VBAC vs C-section that used the term and I found it to be a discouraging term. But-I guess its the truth.

  • Yes, it does bother me, because emotionally/psychologically I need to believe that I can and will have a VBAC.  Not that I'm "trying."

So many of the official terms in ob/gyn care are misogynistic and demeaning to a woman's ability to birth.  I try not to take offense, but it's hard not too.

  • TOL bugs ... but not as much as EDC as in "expected date of confinement" ... yes, some docs still use 'confinement'.  aaaaack.

  • oh, i thought of another good one ... 'incompetent cervix'

  • YES! It bothers me a lot. I feel like they're just ready for me to fail instead of believing my body can do it.
