My DS is a year older - he's turning 3...but some favorites - puzzles, bookes, any kind of thing to build - legos, lincoln logs, duplo blocks, tinker toys, etc. He also loves trains, art projects, mickey mouse, you name it...
We got DS a train set last year (the Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wooden Railway Set), and that is easily the best toy we have. We have added trains and some fun bridges/tunnels, etc. at birthdays and other times, so it is something you can add to. As DS gets older, he is more able to set up the tracks in all types of configurations, but when he was little (20 months or so at last Christmas), he would push the trains along the tracks we set up for him. So it was fun last year, but it just keeps getting better.
both my boys love firetruck anything... books, actual trucks, firemen figurines. they turned over one of their stackable, plastic storage bins from target since it has a dip in it and put their firetrucks under it and made it a firehouse. we had these things for months and they still play with it. they also recently took their toy planes and made a runway out of my yoga mat and used their tball stand for a tower, making it an airport! so i guess i would say toys that will last and then look around the house for things that might help them use them in a new way. just glad my yoga mat finally isn't going to waste collecting dust under my bed!
