to find out or not to find out

What did you ladies decide about finding out the gender? I am pretty sure that we are not going to find out, but was interested in hearing what you are doing and why.

Re: to find out or not to find out

  • DH and I both want to find out.  It'll be so much easier to pick things for our registry that way.

  • We are going to find out. Partly because I am very much a type A personality and feel like I need to know. Also because we are just so excited and won't be able to wait!

  • Finding out.  I'm dying to know!  And I've always been in the "find out" camp.  My stance is, isn't it a surprise when you find out at the u/s?  Yeah, def finding out.

  • 100% finding out. For me, being certain about something is more rewarding than being surprised. I totally respect Team Green parents - I'm just too controlling for it myself! Maybe next time...

  • I'm way too much of a planner not to find out. Luckily, my husband is pretty easygoing. We will definitely be finding out, lol.

  • We found out with DD and will again. Neither of us are good at waiting for surprises. We also feel like it's a surprise no matter when you find out and there is just way too much going on in the delivery room to add that surprise in.

  • Yes definitely! It would drive me crazy not to!

  • We're definitely team green (for now).Confused  I want to form an attachment to the baby that is gender neutral before he/she arrives.  I'd also rather have gender neutral things for a baby shower anyway-- I'm not big into anything overly girl-ish or boy-ish... plus I can reuse the stuff for baby #2 more easily.  I think wanting to find out the gender will give me a little extra energy in the delivery room too.

I definitely respect the other team too!  Both have pro's and con's.

  • Yes, we are finding out.  Since it's our first our anxiety is already thru the roof so we'd feel more comfortable knowing.
  • We are finding out if baby cooperates! DD was very good at keeping her legs shut, so we only got one shot and we were about 80% sure she was a girl. We held off on a lot because we never knew for sure!

  • Finding out, because curiosity is driving me crazy and it will help pick out colors, because I really don't like yellow.

  • We will be finding out. I would love to be team green but I hate a surprise if I know one is coming. It would drive me crazy. I envy people who have the will power to wait and be surprised.

  • We'll be finding out. For us there is no reason not too. It'll be as much of a "surprise" when I find out on an U/S as it will be at delivery but it will make planning sooo much easier.

  • It was an easy choice for us. We both want to know because we are planners. I want a gender neutral nursery, so it doesn't matter that much, but I still really want to know. I think the surprise will be just as big at the ultrasound as the birth, and there will be plenty of other surprises at delivery. I cannot wait to see who our little one looks like.

My sister is due 3 weeks before me, and she's not finding out. It will be interesting to compare our two stories in the end. :)

    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
  • As of now, we are going to wait until the birth day to find out!

    This!

I really want to be surprised at brith!  My husband really wants to find out sooner, so we'll see....

However, we walked through the baby section the other day and found almost no outfits that were gender neutral!  That will be tricky!  I really want to be surprised, and i think the fact that most people find out anymore makes me want to wait even more!

  • We're finding out (we did with the last two). I like to plan and I've said that once we have one of each gender maybe I'll join team green. I felt like it was a really fun surprise to find out at 20 weeks what we were having. And from experience I doubt anyone will need extra motivation to push their baby out. Nothing against team green at all, but just realize the burning down there will be motivation enough, lol.

  • Luckily, DH and I are on the same page; not finding out ahead of time!  We just (personal choice!) don't see any reason to know ahead.  We're not big on gender-specific clothes/decor for an infant.  For us, finding out ahead would be like spoiling the surprise!

  • These were our reasonings as well. I think that I want to do a beach themed nursery b/c we have a lot of special memories in a beach town where my husband spent his summers.  We only have 2 bedrooms, and if we have a second LO while still living in our condo, they will have to share.  I plan on picking up a few things that are gender specific at Kohls since they have an indefinite return policy. I will wash a few things for the hospital bag and pack away items we don't use for the future.

We also both would like a boy first, and I recently was talking to someone that found out she was having a girl and was all disappointed.  I fear that might be me, but I know that in the delivery room, I will not dwell so much on the gender, but just the fact that I get to finally meet our LO!

I also think that it prevents an overload of gender specific things (from both me shopping and gifts). My SIL got so many clothes at her shower and then after, but lacked essentials, like sheets!

For those that want to find out, make sure you eat something sugary when you go t for that u/s, so that he/she is awake and active!

  • Team green first go round and mostly because the old school way of finding out what you are getting sounded so much more fun to me.  My H was a little hard to convince.  This time aroudn we talked about finding out -- just to do something different -- but now we're on the fence.  I wanted to find out (I guess) and now H is not sure he does.  Total flip from the first time!

Also, we decided no matter what we did the first time we were going to buy gender neutral stuff (nursery, toys, 0-6mos clothes) so that we could avoid having to buy everything new for the 2nd baby.  This way we can use all the same stuff for baby #2.   This is just a bit of advice for those cost cutting Moms out there.

  • We just had this conversation last night.  We are team green, too!  I agree with PP that it will give me something to focus on and be even more excited about during the delivery.  I also think it's more fun for friends and family to play the guessing game.
  • I have to find out.  It would drive me crazy not knowing, plus I really like gender specific decor and clothes.  :)

  • We are going to wait. We don't really have a prefrence so it's not like I need to mentally prepare. I will probably want more than one so gender neutral stuff is fine. Plus it will be hot in July, I doubt baby will be wearing much more than a onesie and a diaper.   I figure I can go shopping when he or she gets here.  I already bought an adorable calvin klein jean jacket today at the thrift store that is gender neutral for a dollar. I just couldn't help myself!  The lady asked "do you have a baby that I don't know about?"  I almost outed myself!  I'm a regular so I guess they are gonna figure it out pretty soon.

  • We are going to find out, we are very impatient.  I figure it is a surprise either way and there's so much going on after delivery.  Although, with DS1 I asked the doctor if he was actually a boy, when he came out.  Lol.
