...from a Dec 2010 mom
I planned of BFing, but my milk never came in. Despite having Jack nurse for as long as he would and then pumping for 15-20 minutes every 3-4 hours (getting nothing, btw). I tried fenugreek, mother's milk, and met with a Lactation consultant 4 different times, but no luck.
In the beginning I was afraid to give Jack any formula bc of all the BFing classes and books I had read that made me feel like formula was basically poison. He ended up in the hospital at 3 days old bc he lost 17% of his birth weight (They will loose some weight in the few days after birth, but Dr.'s become concerned when it is over 10%). So we started him on formula that day.
I was determined to find out why my milk never came in. My Dr said there could be many issues at play, including a low-functioning thyroid, but that we will never be sure. I had a pretty bad tear (that's what happens with a 9lb/5ouncer), and it stung to pee, so I (almost subconsciously) stopped drinking a ton of liquids, which is imperative to making milk. You will have to just use the spray and the peri bottle and suck it up .... just another lovely joy of mommyhood ![]()
Anyway, that's my story and I hope it helps some of you!! Please remember to drink lots of liquids, and that giving your baby some formula in the beginning will not ruin your chances at BFing! I don't want any of you to end up having to go back to the hospital a day after you finally get to bring your new baby home!
Good luck ladies!!! December babies are the best!
