3rd Trimester

Induction

So at my appointment today, my doctor told me that I was inducible and that if I wanted I could be induced next Wednesday because she is in all day. My due date is the 26th. Would you do it? Have you done it? I feel like an elective induction is cheating, plus the complications that could come with an induction, but I'm so so ready.

  • Elective inductions seem to be a touchy subject lately, but ultimately it's your personal choice. I have a feeling that my doctor is going to offer me an induction at my appointment this week (I'm due the 24th), but I plan on refusing any inductions until after my due date (and even then I'm not sure if I'd do it before 41 weeks at the earliest). If you're worried about the complications then you should wait it out, at least until your due date. You're so close now, you can make it!

That's what I was just thinking that I am just so close. 11 days until my due date isn't that long.....I can wait. I think I'm just getting anxious and having an actually date in hand makes me feel better.

  • Personally I would wait...I was induced with my 2nd and it was a good experience, but I was also 10 days over with her. So I say wait until you are over due. I wouldn't do it just because. If there is no medical reason then wait it out.

  • I know how you feel about having an actual date, so what you could do is go ahead and have a date picked out that you would like the induction to be on AFTER your due date. That way it's like "14 days or less..." and it becomes an actual countdown instead of just a waiting game. I plan on making an appointment for an induction in my 42nd week if he decides to just stay put, because my hospital won't let me go past that point without being induced and hopefully if I schedule something, he'll make an appearance on his own!!

  • I'm a very impatient person, so I would take it. Plus, nothing like having the fam together for Thanksgiving! I was induced, and it went very well without any hiccups. Best wishes whatever you decide to do!
  • I did the natural, spontaneous childbirth thing twice.  With my first, it wasn't that great. I was 5 days past due, labor was 36 hours.   My 2nd was much better- a week early, 12 hours start to finish.

This time around, I am going to have an induction on Thursday. I am due Nov. 25th.  I'm doing this for a few reasons: my other children need care, and scheduling it is easier than frantically rushing around to get people in place.  I also don't want to chance delivering on the holiday weekend. My daughter was born Memorial Day weekend, and while the labor/delivery was fine, the recovery was stressful and annoying because there weren't as many nurses, etc. scheduled because of the holiday.

I am nervous about the induction...but no matter what, so much can happen in childbirth that can make you nervous either way.

If this is your first, and you aren't dialating or effacing, I'd wait a little longer to induce. Recovery from a C-section is much harder (so I've heard). Take some long walks and see if your doc will strip your membranes at 39 weeks instead...it is like a more "natural" induction- and with my 2nd, did the trick!

  • I loved getting induced! I was induced with my son (bc of medical reasons) but scheduled an elective induction this time. I will be induced at 39 weeks if LO doesnt come on her own.

I am a big planner so it really cut my stress levels down bc I knew when.

It is up to you and dont let anyone try to make you feel bad if you decide too!!! My Dr. thinks that there is nothing wrong with it and I trust her.

  • I had both a natural childbirth and an induction and both were good experiences.  I will have an induction with this baby because of our distance to the hospital and finding childcare.  I was skeptical about inductions going in (the risks etc.) but after having a positive experience I can say that if your doctor says your body is ready and you would like to be induced than go for it.  However, there is something to be said for waiting until when your body and the baby are both ready.

  • I don't see the reason to induce if there's no medical reason for the baby to come out. Just because you're ready doesn't mean your baby is. S/he will come when s/he is ready.

  • I would wait. I changed my mind about it a few times during pregnancy. First I was all about lettign the baby come when he was ready, then I got so uncomfortable and if my doctor had offered me an induction like 3 weeks ago, I'd have jumped on it. I have an induction scheduled for Thursday morning because of high BP but now that it's the day after tomorrow I feel it's too soon (even though I'll be 39 1/2 weeks by then) and I want him to stay in longer. I thought I'd be all excited knowing the exact date but it's making me more nervous than I would be if LO was coming on his own I think. And I'm so scared things won't go right and I'll end up with a c/s or worse.

So I would definately wait it out, at least for now. You can always change your mind in a week or whatever if you want, since they're offering it to you.

  • Unless I was 3-4 cm, no way.

I was induced at 41w4d. Kate was born 3 days later via c-section. My induction was terrible and I don't think it works if your body's not ready. I'd wait.

  • I would wait it out. I would feel pretty bummed to miss going into labour on my own unless I had to.

Similar story here, except much less time laboring before I ended up with the c/s.  Still not fun.  Inductions go well for some people, but from my experience, a bad induction is much worse than being heavily pregnant.

  • I'd wait till you're overdue, but I suppose I'd listen to whatever your doc thinks is best. We had to induce my first one at 41 weeks but she was still less than seven lbs., so I think she needed the extra time. Looks like I'll be induced a week late with this one too... I hate waiting, but if that's what is best for the baby, that's what we'll do!
