Things certainly are different in Milwaukee huh?
Link above to the ad and picture which is :
"As reported in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the campaign, unveiled last Wednesday, includes two posters of a baby lying in a bed next to a large knife. In one, the baby is white; in the other, the baby is black. ?YOUR BABY SLEEPING NEXT TO YOU CAN BE JUST AS DANGEROUS,? the copy blares.
The second-leading cause of infant mortality in Milwaukee is SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, which often results from ?unsafe sleep,? according to the health department?s website. A form of ?unsafe sleep? is bed-sharing with parents."
Re: Yikes, provacative co-sleeping ad
Reminds me of when this Cali girl first went to Ohio for college... and I saw a pro-life billboard on the side of the road. Shocked doesn't even begin to cover it! I gasped and I was like, "That wouldn't even be up for 5 minutes in the Bay Area!!"
It's crazy how different California is. We take it for granted living here because even our conservative contingents are pretty accepting of everyone, but the rest of the country really does think we are fruits and nuts!!
The knife didn't even register in my brain as danger compared to the pillow and soft bedding! "unsafe sleep" is so vague. Pillows, bedding and a soft matress can cause unsafe sleep as well. I don't know why but the add has my panties in a bunch and we didn't co-sleep.

The saddest part to me is that ad probably won't make any difference. I just don't think things like that actually provide the knowledge needed to ensure people practice "safe sleep".
It does make me wonder what percentage of their SIDS deaths occur in a bed-sharing environment.

You would be right Kelly.
We don't bed share anymore, but did for the first 3-4 months of his life. I refuse to believe that my child sleeping ON my chest put him at a higher risk for SIDS. Just like I am not getting on board the no-bumper bandwagon. I have yet to find an actual study that is not retrospective (with out of date bumpers at that) and will gladly read info if someone has it.
I am tired of fear tactics that are based on nothing.
Tons of cultures co-sleep and have a lower incidence of SIDS than ours.
Ditto. Drives me bonkers when people think that suffocation and SIDS are the same thing. They are not.
Piss poor propaganda.
I didn't think we'd bed share, but we learned quickly that LO slept best when sleeping right beside me, and I felt best with him there and knowing that he was getting what he needed. I guess I figured there's a reason he strongly desires being that close to me, and a reason my instincts told me it was the right thing to do. So I researched safe bed sharing and looked at actual statistics and facts about infants dying in adult beds and the more I read, the more at peace I was with it. Now that I'm close to having to return to work, I don't see myself being able to give up our nighttime snuggles anytime soon.
There is obviously something contributing to a higher incidence of SIDS in Milwaukee, but their focus is WAY off. The poster doesn't discourage falling asleep on the couch with the baby, for example (one of the contributors of the higher incidence in Milwaukee). Basically, the poster is ANTI-bedsharing but not really PRO-safe sleep. They really missed the mark.
