What kind of Bottles??

I am wanting to breast feed but also know that I need to have some bottles on hand as well.

There are so many bottles out there that I don't even know where to begin.. I would love any in put that you can give me..  Which bottles you use and why you love them or don't like them.

Thanks in Advance,

  • To be honest- I've tried Avent, Dr. Browns, etc but I liked Playtex Vent Air w/ both of my kids so far.

  • This is going to completely depend on what your baby does well with. All bottles have different results depending on the baby-- what works for one won't always work for another. My advice is to buy one bottle of two or three types, and go from there. I think they say if you're also breastfeeding, to go with the "wide" style bottles. I know Born Free are always highly recommended for nursing moms, as well as Madela and Tommy Tippee. We liked Playtex Ventaire.

  • I used Dr. Brown's and they worked just fine.  The one downside is they have a lot of parts to clean.  I also used the Medela ones that came with my breast pump - those worked fine too.

  • My kids are older so there weren't as many choices before.  I was a little lost until I found that they still sell the playtex drop ins.  I LOVED them!  I BF and pumped (mostly pumped) and really liked the playtex drop ins because the bags are easy to place and dispose of.  You can remove the air by pressing on the bags, my kids had very little gas problems and no colic.  I used it with all my twins and can't wait to use it for this one (if I end up pumping).  I did hear that playtex have the expanding bags but they have bad reviews due to how hard reading measurements are, so I'm going to just still with the regular dropins.  Hope this helps!

  • Oh...and I wanted to add a couple more things.....

They are super easy to heat up in hot water because the bags are exposed and thin, and if you ever get a "lost" bottle that you find weeks later from under the couch you can just throw away the bag and possibly the nipple (depending on the damage) and the rest stays pretty clean.  I also didn't have to buy a pain in the butt bottle brush because nothing was hard to wash, it was seriously the easiest way to do bottles.

  • I love the Platex drop ins too. I do not like the changes they made to the Platex  ventairs I used them with my first he's now 7 and then again with my 1 year old the new design leaks and isn't as good imo. I do think you need a wide bottle if you are going to nurse and stick with stage one nipples since they are most like your breast even as lo grows so they don't get lazy and only want the bottle.

  • I began with Dr Browns with DD and found them to leak a LOT.  Eventually switched to Born Free and found them to work very well.

This. I bought and tried probably a could 10 bottles for DS, but the only ones he would take and latch onto (without crying and having gas problems) were the Playtex Ventair Wide Nipple ones. I really wouldn't buy any now, or just buy one at a time, because babies can be picky.

  • I am going with the Avent

  • Babies can be pretty picky, especially breast fed babies when they're used to just the boob.  I would advise you get one bottle from several different brands and see what the baby chooses.  It took over 5 brands to get my daughter onto the bottle.  We had luck with Playtex Drop-Ins, Dr. Brown's and Avents.

...it's two extra pieces than a normal standard bottle, it's not that big of a deal.

  • My advice would be not to load up on any one type - we did that with DD and got tons of Playtex Ventairs for our shower and she ended up not taking them (we discovered this after we washed them all...).  We went on to try Avents, Medella, Gerbers, and ended up going with Born Free bottles - they were the only ones DD would take.

  • Thank you so much for all of your help ladies...  I was already looking at the Born Free and the Breast Flow so I like hearing that some of you have liked those.

  • Another vote for playtex drop ins. So easy to clean.

I bought the starter pack last time so I would have something when he got here but I wouldn't be out much money if he didn't like them.

  • We used Dr. Brown's glass bottles and will again for this LO. The only time I ever had a problem with them leaking was if I tried to use them without all of the extra parts.

  • We just moved so I haven't done a lot of shopping for the baby but, as others have mentioned, I'll be trying a few different brands and seeing which one he/she takes to. So far, I've got Playtex Drop Ins and Dr. Browns.

I am also going to be a FTM but I am planning on using Playtex Drop-ins also. I have talked to a lot of people that have had good thing's to say about them. I have heard that they are great if you plan on breastfeed, and that they are more sanitized because you use a new drop in each time.

  • The only ones that worked for DD were the Dr. Brown's ones. I didn't want to use them because of all the pieces, but they worked wonders. I also found special Dr. Brown's dishwasher baskets for all of the pieces that make life a lot easier.

  • Honestly, it really all depends on what your LO is willing to take. Some could care less, others are SUPER picky, and then there are the very rare who will refuse anything that isn't the breast. With that said, I agree w/pp, wide neck bottles seems to be the first choice for bf babies. There are several on the market, so my best advice is to either 1-add a few small/single packs of different brands of bottles on your registry in the hopes you'll recieve them and only open one pack at a time after you are SURE LO won't take it, or 2-go out and just purchase small/single packs of different brands and see how it goes. I know it seems like such a waste of money, but you won't know what LO will take until you try. Hopefully, your LO won't be too picky. I'm hoping my LO will take Avent.....

  • honestly it's going to be trial and error after your LO is born... I breast fed my son and on days where I would work would use pumped milk in the Playtex drop-ins and he did fine with those.  I like the drop ins because it was easier to clean, I tried the Playtex vent air but it had more parts and took me longer to take apart and clean (I know it sounds lazy but with a newborn every bit of free time you can get counts haha).  He liked the wider nipples (like the diameter of the part that fits on the bottle) rather than the small ones... not sure if that makes sense or not!

  • We loved the gerber NUK bottles with DS but we used almost every kind of bottle they had out there. He liked the playtex ventaire and also the really cheap 98cent bottles at walmart (i was in a bind and they didnt have anyother bottles that were not like $10) so we ended up switching to those they didnt leak and they worked great!
