My DH wants to get some tablets for the kids for Christmas. He wants them to be able to play games at home and watch movies in the car when we travel. We could buy them a DVD player, but it would be about 1/2 the cost of the tablet. I also would want to get DD some sort of educational game toy, which again would be about 1/2 the cost of the tablet, so tablet is the way what we are thinking. We are only getting wifi.
Does your child use a tablet? If so, what kind and how old are they? What do you like/ not like about it? What would you get?
Re: Computer tablets and kids?
Both my girls use my Motorola Zoom. I like it, but I kinda wish DH had gotten me an iPad instead since I now have an iPhone...
Anyway, we bought both the girls a LeapPad and I just finished uploading games and Leapfrog movies onto it for an upcoming flight. It also came w/ 5 apps(you can pick 3) and then we got another free one for being "among the first to try their new LeapPad). We paid $60 for the system and apps (games and videos) have all been $10 a piece so far, though they can go up to $25. They have a collection of 100 videos you can chose from.
A tablet would definitely be better in the long-run, but I wanted one for each of them and with them being 2 and 4, and temper tantrums, I thought this would be better for now.

Also wanted to add, since your DD is 6, I'd maybe look into the Kindle Fire. I *think* it runs all the same apps an android would, though I don't know about videos...? and at $200, it's a much better price then an iPad or Zoom. They do have cheaper tablets, but a lot of those don't get great reviews.
I also considered getting the girls an iPhone Touch each, since those are also around $200, but again, we decided on the LeapPads instead.

DS (2 yrs 3 months) uses any iPad or iPhone he can get his hands on. We limit his time. But he knows how to get into apps and get out of an app back to the main menu, and if he's not watched will get into phone lists and email and text and send gibberish to your contacts! Haha (we have a friend to thank for his skills here... *shakes fist*) At any rate he loves using these electronics. I would not buy him a tablet computer or "iPod Touch" or anything like that until he was 4 or 5 though. For now it's enough to let him play with ours a little bit as a special treat.
https://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/11/speck-iguy-ipad/ That friend I mentioned sent me this... it is very cute but if they were smart they would have built it so that it blocked the square "control" button at the bottom so kids couldn't get out of whatever game app they were playing and mess with your non-kid programs haha.
Maybe try that new "Leap Pad" that everyone is raving about?
