Postpartum weight loss? Your experience?

My baby is 6 weeks now I lost 20 lbs pretty quick after (first 2 weeks) now I seem to be in a standstill. I am breast feeding eat healthy, almost no junk food and definitely way more active then when I was pregnant. I just expected to lose more at this point. Everyone keeps telling me it's too soon and Its only been a month and a half! I am normally 140 and am balancing out at 175. Argh!

Just am curious what other experiences are? How much weight have you lost? Did you stall for a bit and then lose more?

  • I gained 32 lb and lost 22 lbs by about 1 month.   I've not lost any since then although I'm EBFing and not too careful with diet at this point although I am exercising regularly again.  I go back to work in Jan and will probably start eating healthier again then.

  • I'm pregnant with my first so I've yet to experience the weight loss after birth. I just wanted to remind you that it took 9 months to get to your weight at baby's birth, so give yourself time and patience to get back to your baseline. Be kind to yourself and just keep making those healthy choices. It weight will come off in due time.

  • I gained 30, lost 11 the first week, 18 by two weeks, and then it dramatically slowed down. By 5 months I had lost 28 pounds and I hit pre-preg weight around 6 months. I'm now 1 or 2 pounds below pre-pg weight but still squashy.
  • I gained 60 pounds with my pregnancy and lost it by about five months postpartum.  The first 20 came off quickly, the rest more slowly.  By eight months postpartum, I was 10 pounds below my pre-pregnancy weight and maintained.
  • I gained around 30ish pounds with each pregnancy. I actually didn't lose it all until after I stopped breast feeding. For some people breast feeding seems to help them lose weight, for others they tend to hold onto those last 10 or so pounds. I was in the latter category. I didn't really start trying to actively lose those last 10lbs until DS was about 15 months. And then I lost that and another 10+ that I needed to lose.

  • I got pregnant at 120, weighed 140 at my last appointment (41 weeks) and was 124 at my 6 weeks post partum visit.  I worked out a ton and breastfed and tried to eat healthy.  I was around 115 or under (my actual "normal") a few months after that.  I thought it was really easy to lose weight breastfeeding because of the 300 daily calories it burns.

  • I gained 40lbs and lost 20 within the first 2 weeks PP (I am EBF). I am now at a standstill and I know I need to start exercising. That's usually the key for me to lose weight. I am walking regularly, but I've always had to have intense workouts to lose weight. Walking doesn't do it for me.

I eat well (better now that the Halloween candy is out of the house Smile) and so I know that once I get back into a workout routine, it will come off.

However, at this time, I'm still getting used to our new life with a baby and will resume working out probably within the next month.

  • I only gained 24lbs during pregnancy, so for the most part only gained the baby's weight and fluids.  I lost 20 of it in the first 2 weeks.  Although I was going for walks with baby to get in some exercise, I unintentionally dropped another 8 in the month following that while I was EBF.   I just wasn't eating & sleeping well at all, so I was under my pre-pg weight after 2 months (although, a lot of that was lost muscle).  The pedi kept telling me I had to gain weight if I wanted to keep up BF, but it just wouldn't happen.  I regret having lost weight too fast as it ruined my supply and I had to start supplementing, and finally gave up BF altogether at 3 mo's.  I had a lot of guilt that I'm only now getting over.

I had read/been told that many women won't lose those last few pounds until they wean.  If you want to continue BF & keep a healthy supply, I wouldn't sweat those last few pounds just yet.

  • With both of my kids, I gained between 25-30 lbs, lost 20 of it by 2 wk pp, and peaked at 5-7 lbs above my baseline at 1 month.  If I exercise heavily while BFing, I experience a dip in supply so I'd warn you to start out easy until you know how your supply responds.  Also, at least with my first LO, I lost the rest of the weight as soon as I weaned at a year.  I think formula body just instinctively holds on to a bit of extra padding while BFing to have "extra fuel".

  • Pre-preg weight: 160, gained 50lbs. Dropped 20lbs within the first week postpartum and stalled for 3 weeks. I was tracking calories and EBF and couldn't understand why the standstill so I started weight watchers. It really worked for me, my baby is now 4 months old, and I have 5 more lbs to lose to get to 160 again. I stopped tracking points 2 weeks ago too, and it's still coming off. I've been back to work for 2 months too. I feel great! I barely get time to exercise anymore either, whereas on maternity leave, I was working out 4-5 days a week twice a day sometimes.

  • I gained 30 lbs with my pregnancy, and I certainly had not lost it all after 1 month. Don't be so hard on yourself! BFing I think is what really did it for me... It was about 3 months that I was back down, and even below pre-pregnancy weight.

  • I gained about 50 lbs.   I lost 15 lbs before coming home from the hospital.  Then I didn't lose a single ounce for 6 months.  I ate well, EBF and went on long walks with DD.  Nothing.

When DD turned 6 months I lost 25lbs in 2 months, I would literally wake up every morning feeling significantly lighter.  I did nothing differently - it was just like my metabolism turned back on or something.  It was crazy.  Until recently I haven't put a lot of effort into losing more weight - over the past 2 months I have cut dairy out of my diet completely and cut back on eating meat to 2x a week.  It has helped me with some digestive issues and I have lost about 7 lbs with little effort - I am a few pounds away from PP weight and I am hoping to lose about 15 more to be at my high school weight. :)

  • Gained 30 lbs, lost 20 in the first month, and then the extra 10 stuck around until my son was about 4 months when it seemed to come off.  Be patient!  You'll get there.
