So here are my top boy and girl names. Looking for feedback.
Criteria: DH and I are French, with a very French, very long last name. Sort of like Darcypaine, but more French. We want a French name that English people know how to pronounce and spell (seeing as our kids will ALWAYS have to spell their last name we kind of want to go easy on the first name). DD's name is Claire. We gravitate towards Classic/Timeless names.
GIRLS
Eleanor
Beatrice (this is DH's fav, but I'm not so keen on it for this LO for some reason)
Brigitte (pronounced like Bridget in English, but like bree-jeet in French)
Genevieve (worried about the English pronounciation of this and I HATE the nn Gen... but I LOVE it in French. Would use Gigi as a nn most likely).
BOYS
Bruno
Jean-Luc (yes, we're Star Trek fans, but not obssessive - we just really love this name and figure by the time the LO grows up, Star Trek will only be some obscure pop culture reference).
Henri (French spelling)
Benoit (worried about pronounciation with this one)
So, what do you think? What are you favs? Which ones would you have no idea how to pronounce or spell if someone said, "My name is ..."?
Re: My Top Boy & Girl Names - Help!

The Vagtastic Voyage
I love Eleanor... and call her Elle or Ellie for short
Struggling with the boys names... I'd have to go with Henri
Good luck! I'm having a tough time choosing as well!
GIRLS
Eleanor- Meh
Beatrice - Alright
Brigitte -Alright
Genevieve -Alright
BOYS
Bruno - No
Jean-Luc - No way
Henri -eh?
Benoit -Absolutely not
I didn't know that either. I'm kind of tempted to google it, but too scared of what would pop up on my computer - LOL.
For the Girls names:
1. Beatrice - LOVE
2. Briggitte - Really nice. If I saw it spelled this way, I'd pronounce bree-jeet not Bridge - it. I think others might too. Of course, bree-jeet is beautiful, so that could be fine.
3. Eleanor - Really like, but maybe a little too popular for me right now (at least in my neighborhood - we have TONS of adorable little Eleanors running around)
4. Genevieve - It's a beautiful name, but I think it would get butchered or she'd end up being Jen or Jenny.
Boys
Henri - LOVE. Simple, classic timeless, but not overdone. Very nice.
Jean-Luc - I like.
Bruno - sadly, I get an image of Sacha Baron Cohen in my head when I hear this name
and Benoit - well, the sex toy thing voided any opinion I would have had on this name.
I love Brigitte.
For your boys names I love Henri and Jean-Luc ( I am a Star Trek fan too and with a very French name I think you can pull it off)
My Awesome Craft Blog
My other blog
These names would be my choice too. (Since I pretty much ruined one name, I at least wanted to vote on the others).
And Joanithegreat, love your avatar
Still mad they killed the old cow though.
If you're going based on easy to spell/pronounce in both languages:
Bruno and Beatrice are your best bets,no contest.
But if you want to know my favorites....
Jean-Luc and Genevieve.
This.
I wouldn't mind the association.
Hello fellow May2012 mom!
From your list, I like Genevieve & Beatrice. Could I also add C?line as a suggestion? I had a French friend with that name. Also Am?lie & Camille.
From your boy choices I like Henri.
Brigitte and Henri!
Brigitte was my name in French class.
I like all of your girl names
I really like Jean-Luc and Henri

Genevieve and Jean-Luc
Love all your girls names, but you're right Genevieve will never be pronounced with the French pronunciation, so if that's important to you I wouldn't use it.
Henri is my favorite of your boys names. I do like Benoit, but it makes me think of this clip from Archer which will show you how most people will react:

Love, love, love Eleanor
Really like Beatrice, but love Eleanor more
I'm not a fan of Brigitte or Genevieve (which will not be pronounced the way you want it to).
I have a friend whose son is named Bruno and when I tell people that, they all cringe. It's not the best name and due to the Sasha Baron Cohen movie, it's only got negative connotations.
I love Henri and I like Jean-Luc a lot. I think Benoit will be mispronounced all the time--I went to school with a girl whose last name was Benoit and everyone pronounced it "Ben-oyt" rather than "Ben-wah" even with her correcting people. What about Jean-Baptiste? I always loved that name.
mm 2/17/11 * dd born 4/20/12 * bo 1/3/14 * edd 1/21/ 1/15
Genevieve! (I LOVE the French pronunciation and think Gigi is adorable.)
And also Henri.
I think all of those names are great though.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!
For Genevieve we would use the French pronounciation when we're talking in French, and probably Gigi when we're talking in English. Does that make sense? DH and I are both completely bilingual and switch from one to the other frequently (as does most of our family and friends).
For Jean-Luc, we don't mind the Star Trek association. At least it might make it easier for people to spell!
Someone suggested Celine, but where I'm from when you say Celine EVERYONE thinks Celine Dion (since we're all from the same place), and that would be weird, and I really like Camille but worry about having two daughters with a hard C name...
Eleanor Noelle - 18/05/12 Claire Elisabeth - 16/-5/10
I love your names! More specifically:
GIRLS
Eleanor - LOVE! DH and I put this on our list last night...my only hold up is that it looks like it is *way* on the way up wrt popularity, jumping from 218 to 165 from 2009 to 2010
Beatrice - I like this, hubby thinks it sounds too stuffy for a little girl. I can see it either way.
Brigitte - LOVE! But I think most people would say Bri-jeet not Bree-jeet. It rolls off the lazy American tongue more easily. I wouldn't mind that, but I think it will happen.
Genevieve - I am pretty aware of names and I didn't even know there was a French pronounciation of this, I think you'd get the American pronounciation all the time. It's also hard to spell for most people.
BOYS
Bruno - Not a fan..just doesn't seem like a serious human male's name to me. nn? fine. But this would look weird to me on a job application.
Jean-Luc - I'm a total fan and like a PP said think you could pull it off with a very French LN
Henri - LOVE! Masculine, French, but mainstream. He would be correcting people on the "i" all the time, but honestly I grew up having to spell my first and last name all the time and liked it, didn't dislike it.
Benoit - I think it is a nice name, but very, very not-American. I would pronounce it right, but many might not, and I doubt many could spell it correctly if they heard it.
