Babyproofing vent

Why are my kids so interested in electrical outlets?  To this day, Gavin will still try to stick his finger in!  He's almost 4!  And outlet covers... they think those are buttons to push.  So when we are somewhere that doesn't have them... they are magnetically drawn to where the buttons should be to push the non-existant buttons.  I can't win.  We seriously have to travel with a bag ful of outlet covers for hotel rooms.  I was really hoping that Sophie would just ignore them.  I swear, my neice never paid them a bit of attention.  They didn't have to babyproof for her at all.  I can't imagine that with my kids.  They are into everything and ummm not so coordinated either.  We have lots of bumps and bruises in this house.  Our house has a very open floorplan.  The kitchen/breakfast/family room are all one big open room.  We actually have it pretty well sectioned off so that Sophie can't get to the stairs or dining room.  And we have bought every kind of babyproofing gadget you can imagine.  Yet I still can't take my eyes off Sophie for a second b/c she will climb on the coffee table, scale the highchair, pull the computers off the kitchen table, torment the cats while they sleep in the window, whatever.  The superyard works for short periods as long as I give her something "new" to play with like tupperware or pots/pans (which is what she is doing right now).  But 90% of my day is spent chasing her around this one area and steering her back to her toys. This was especially problematic over the weekend when both DH and I were sick w/ stomach flu and really not up to chasing her everywhere.  So how do you guys handle this- am I missing something?  Gavin was stationary for so long and I really took it for granted.  Having an active baby is driving me insane.

Re: Babyproofing vent

  • Superyard.  We have two of them that when L was smaller we linked together to make a bigger play space.  It kept her out of everything.  I used to wrap it around our couch so I could sit on the couch and play with her without her wondering into the rest of the house.  We have also traveled with it.  It is a PITA to travel with but worth it to know your baby isn't messing around with breakables, outlets, etc.

btw- I have seen them brand new in the box at once upon a child for a really good price.

  • With Adam I did a part of the room that was completely his, but we didn't have such an open floorplan then.  I basically took everything that was not safe out (including coffee table) just so I could at least leave him for 2 seconds to get the laundry.  It was a life saver.  Ansley is very active already, so I was thinking about investing in a super yard soon for her.

  • We were extremely lucky with Derek and he was one of those kids that really didn't get into anything. He'd happily play with his toys and stay away from the outlets and anything that would cause him harm. Just recently has he started climbing and we'll have to anchor the big bookcase in the living room. Parker on the other hand, I think, is going to give us a run for our money. He wants to be into every little thing. It's like night and day.  I don't really know how we're going to handle him, we'll just take it each bruise at a time I think.
