Is this reflux?

So Smith is generally a very happy and laid-back baby, unless he's eating.  But probably 50% of the time, he cries throughout each feeding.  Every few minutes I have to burp him, and then he'll be okay for another few minutes.  No matter what though, he spits up every single time he eats.  Multiple times during each feeding, and then usually again about 30 minutes after he's done.  Spitting up doesn't seem to bother him - it actually seems to make him feel better.  Is this reflux?  Caroline spit up like 2 times ever, so this is all new territory for me.  But like I said, half the time he's fine and eats like a champ, no crying or screaming.  But the other half of the time it is a battle to get him to stay on the boob without wailing.

Re: Is this reflux?

  • It sounds like it to me.  My son had reflux and it sounds similar.  It didn't seem to bother him very much and mostly our pedi was just concern he get enough to gain wait.  He did outgrow it once he was able to eat solids.

  • A was diagnosed with mild reflux around 3 months. Our pedi said the distinction was happy spitter vs. unhappy, crying, in pain spitter. A always spit up alot, moreso than H, but it didn't start bothering her until 2.5 months. She would get so fussy while eating and after until she spit up. Once she spit up she was happy again. I tried eliminating dairy first, but it did no good. Dr. gave us a prescription for Zantac and we saw a huge difference! I called and talked to the nurse first and then took her in. I usually don't say this, but google reflux in infants and you will see a list of symptoms - spitting up 2 or more hours after eating etc. A had quite a few of them and that's what pushed me to consult pedi. A had no trouble gaining weight and maintaining so her case was mild. Hope that helps some.

  • It sounds like reflux to me. My DS had it bad- would spit up during feedings and scream and scream after.  He was prescribed Zantac- and later Axid when the Zantac wasnt strong enough. It made a huge difference and he grew out of it and we stopped the medicine when he was a year old. Good luck!

  • Yes, sounds like reflux. We saw a huge difference on William after he started taking Axid.

  • Sounds like reflux to me. Parker also would pop off the breast often throughout a feeding. He wasn't upset with the spitting up, but would cry before hand and be fussy after eating until he spit up again. He was a totally different baby once on Zantac.
