Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Question about puffs

So I just purchased the Gerber Puffs this weekend to see how LO (29 weeks) would take to them since she really hasn't been liking the puree food. I wanted to see if she is simply Miss Independent and wants to feed herself...sure enough she LOVED picking them up and feeding herself. But this is my question --

1. Is LO too young for them? She is 6 weeks, 3 months?

2. The ingredients have wheat in them? I thought I was suppose to avoid wheat at all costs?

Re: Question about puffs

  • I think you mean 6 months, 3 weeks...lol  I started my DD then too, I just cut them up...She puts them towards her mouth but can't get it in b/c it sticks to her fingers...I heard wheat is ok as long as there is no family hx of wheat/digestive issues

  • We introduced puffs at about that age.

The puffs we have say that they are ready for them once they are using thumb & forefinger to pick up food - and once they are crawling with stomach off the ground.  So, if your LO is doing those things, I wouldn't worry at all.

The thing about avoiding wheat seems to be kinda controversial.  That probably has to be your decision based on family history on your comfort level.  Personally, I'm not avoiding very many foods anymore (just honey, peanuts, strawberries...)

  • We started puffs last month and DD LOVES them.  She probably eats too many of them, but it's hard to tell b/c only about 1 in 5 actually end up in her mouth.

  • We started puffs around 6 months but LO doesnt really like them and they stick to his fingers. But we BLW and he would just rather have some bananas or something else.

  • We started puffs at about 5 1/2 months.  Chloe loves them!  I broke them up for her once and she choked on them, when I give them to her whole she does just fine.

  • I think I gave her puffs at 7 months. If your not comfortable giving her wheat than don't it's okay to wait.

  • We just started giving our LO puffs - she could care less for crawling, but she's doing everything else that I broke down - She loves feeding herself. As for the wheat - it seems like to me what you should or should not be concerned about giving baby depends on where you're from and your pedi. I know here in the US everyone is much more concerned about acidic foods and wheat and other allergens but in some countries it's normal first foods. Last I knew - Italy was big into giving tomatoes and garlic (makes sense, they're quintessential Italian flavors). I grew up in Holland where (at least when I was  child) common first food was a wheat biscuit cut up and mixed with OJ. IMHO, I think the big thing is that if you have concerns, talk to your pedi and do what you feel comfortable with.

  • The Plum Organics puffs are wheat free, I believe. That's what I have been buying.
  • Mum mums are wheat free, and LO loves them.

We're also doing BLW, so he gets a variety of things to feed himself. Keep her in her high chair, upright and supervised. That's the most important thing.

we got these too---I was so thankful to find them since DS1 was allergic to wheat--we're being careful with DS2.
