Ever since DS saw the Cars 2 Garage in one of the toy books that came, it is all he keeps saying he wants. Anytime anyone asks him what he is going to ask Santa for, that's what he says. When I first looked at it, I thought it looked kind of lame, and probably like something he would play with a couple times and be done with it. For $40 I wasn't too thrilled about it, but I guess that happens with a lot of toys, and since it is the only thing he ever talks about I planned to get it.
But now that I have looked into it more, all the reviews are bad. Everyone says the elevator doesn't work and is really hard to operate even for an adult, and kids have gotten their fingers pinched in it, etc. I really do not want to buy this toy now. Obviously because of safety reasons, but also because even if he doesn't hurt his fingers, he will get super frustrated if he can't operate it himself. But I don't want DS to be disappointed and he will totally remember not getting it.
Part of me thinks that he will be so excited with the other new stuff he is getting, he might not mind, but then part of me is afraid he'll ask about it, and what should I say? WWYD? Suck it up and buy it? Or come up with some kind of excuse as to why Santa didn't bring it?
Here is the toy:
Re: WWYD? Christmas/Cars Garage related
There are other similar garages like that, maybe look for one that isn't Cars branded?

remind your child that Santa has alot of children to make toys for and that sometimes he can't make every toy that every child wants. This worked for my DD who wanted every pillowpet.HTH
I had a similar issue last year -- DS wanted a toy he saw at Target. He was A. too big for said toy, and B. it got terrible reviews. So I bought a similar toy that was more age appropriate. He barely touched it. He seemed happy/fine on Xmas and never complained about it but he also doesn't use it. I'm not sure I would change my mind about it, but yeah, I've been there.
As for the garage, I totally trust Amazon reviews. If it's hard to use, I will not buy it and if I can, I'll return it. Sadly, DS asked for a train thing last year that got crap reviews. My mom, who was informed of said crap reviews, bought toy anyway for DS' birthday. Birthrday boy put it together with DH and promptly ended up in tears because the toy would not work. It sucked the life out of birthday celebrations real fast. Trust parent reviews on Amazon -- there are usually so many that if something is mentioned more than once, it isn't a fluke.
I tend to pay attention to reviews if a toy is pricey( over $20 or so) so for something $40 I would reconsider if it gets a lot of bad reviews. Especially if many of the reviews complain of the same thing, to me that makes it more credible. Maybe look for another similar Cars 2 toy. There is a cool looking race track that has Francesco and Lightning McQueen DD has been wanting for Christmas. Link
He'll likely forget all about the garage on Christmas morning,.
