Austin Babies

What name do you love that your DH/SO nixed?

I love the name Ava for a girl (LOOOVE it) DH nixed it immediately because it reminds him of Hitler's GF.

I also love the name Porter which didn't get nixed by DH but major objections from my mom calling the child Porter Steakhouse (?) and side eye.

Re: What name do you love that your DH/SO nixed?

  • Actually, Porter was on our short list too.  It's the name of one of Johnny Cash's songs that I like a lot (Hey, Porter!).  I love Gabriel, but Jay nixed that one.  I also wanted to use my dad's name (Thomas) as a middle name for Spencer, but then I realized that I got to name Cooper, Spencer, picked Cooper's middle name (a family name of mine) and figured Jay should get to choose Spencer's.  No surprise, he didn't pick my dad's name.  Hmph.

  • My one condition if it was a girl was that she keep my middle name.  I so wanted to name her Olive and hubs agreed until he said it out loud "Olive Joy".  Said is sounded too much like dish soap. Confused

  • I preface this by saying that my husband can ruin a name faster than anyone else I've ever met.

He nixed Jackson/Jack for a boy because he said kids might call him "jack-off". That was the only boy name I loved that he didn't like.

For girls he nixed Eleanor, Beatrice and Esme as being too old-fashioned. Had Alex been a girl, he likely would have been Anne/Anna/Annie or Charlotte.

  • Reid. It was my number one name for a boy and DH didn't like it because it's only 1 syllable. Oh, you mean like your first name and the nickname you choose to go by, DH? Confused

  • dh nixed some of my boy names, which never mattered (i wanted a boy named donovan with the nn 'van'- my maiden name).

for girls he vetoed wren, vivian and violet

  • Hayes. I love that name and DH looked at me like I had not two but three heads.

  • Mable.  I wanted to name DD Mable soooo badly.  It was DH's grandma's name and she was the sweetest lady, but DH couldn't get past the "old lady" association.

The only girl name he has nixed so far that I like a lot is Skylar.

Of the thousand and one boy names he nixed, here are the ones I remember that I really love: Tate, Andrew (Drew), Cash, Quinn, Ryder, Reid, Cohen, Link, and Roan. Yeah, we went through a lot of boy names.

Some of your boys name are on my "Love" list Ryder, Cohen and Rowan (even though that isn't Roan) we do call Lincoln, Linc though.  Boys names were SOO much harder for us to agree on. We literally made a date to negotiate names.

Ha!  My maiden name (which you know - it's on FB) sounds similar to "off" and my mom wanted SO much to name my little brother Jack.  Fortunately my dad wouldn't have it.

  • I used to like the name Giselle. DH nixed it b/c it had the sound "giz" in it.  My DH is also really good at ruining a name :(

Ha!  Do NOT bring up Cohen over on Baby Names.  Unless you're looking for a shitstorm.  In which case, go on ahead!  Until these boards I never knew there was any issue with it, it only reminded me of the Cohen family on the OC (love).

  • There are too many to name, which is to say he nixed almost every single one of my suggestions as being "too poncy", "too American-sounding", "too English-sounding" or reminding him of this kid he once new in preschool who slighted him in some (obviously) emotionally scarring way.  And this was just for picking the middle names!  Ugh.  I finally threw a 5000 baby name book at him and told him to make a list himself because I was tired of being shot down.  There were so many that I thought were awesome and he couldn't possibly object to, but no.  I was very, very wrong.

Haha I never go over there. It's a Hebrew name and is actually Linc's Hebrew name. I so badly wanted a Jewish/Hebrew background in my kids names. Lincoln obviously isn't but David (his mn) is and after my uncle that was dear to my heart. I really liked Porter Cohen so if we have a 3rd and a boy that might just be the name. I still have time to convince DH.

  • I liked Evan but DH said one of his co-worker's named his little boy that too.  I wanted to try and incorporate DH's grandmother's name into our LO's name.  It was Eva.  So it was Evan or Eva.
  • Like mcgee and feisty, my DH and ruin a name in no time flat.

For boys we agreed on our son's name really quickly, but I did love Travis, Jack and Asher and those were for sure no's for him.

Girls names.....we are SO screwed if these babies are girls. We never came to a consensus on a girls name during my first pregnancy and we're having just as much trouble this time. I like classic names and he likes trendier names and a few "stripper" names. I like Elizabeth (Ella/Ellie), Kathryn/Kate, Grace, Carolina and he says Ellie sounds like a cow :(

  • I originally wanted to name DS#2 Rowan, but DH vetoed it.  If we ever decide to have a third, I might push for Rowan again and see what happens.   For a girl, I wanted to give her the middle name Lucianna (my grandfather's name was Lucianno), but he was never too keen on it.

    :-)

  • Oh where to start.  My absolute favorite boy name ever is Luke and DH shot it down because my cousin is named Luke.  Also, apparently everyone named Luke (aside from my 8 year old cousin) is a stoner.  According to DH, it's only a matter of time  ::side eye::

I also love Andrew (Drew) but he hates it.  Also, my sister's boyfriend is named Drew and they seem to be pretty serious so I guess it's out.  My other fav is Patrick, but we both hate the nn Pat.

ETA: I forgot!  He totally shot down my middle name for Kate.  I wanted her to be Katherine Marie but he thought it was too Catholic.  (I'm Catholic, he's an atheist.)  We finally agreed on Katherine Michelle, but I'm still mildly bitter about it.

  • I wanted Luke for a boy but DH couldn't get past Darth Vadar.

Layna was supposed to be Helena called Lena but he didn't want people to call say it like the capital of Montana.  He would have been okay spelling it Helayna but I just couldn't do it.  We compromised on Alayna and we really shouldn't have, I don't like it at all and cringe when people call her that.

  • Finnegan (Finn). I know it's kinda trendy and not everyone's style but I love it. DH thinks it's ridiculous... And since our last name is extremely german, he thinks it sounds horrible.

Ill still fight for it though.

He's obsessed with the name Murphy. We can't even have the conversation anymore.

Apparently it's offensive to some Jewish people when it's used by non-Jewish people?  I'm admittedly ignorant on the matter, I just know it always starts a battle.

  • DH has vetoed so many names it's not even funny.  I really really want to name this baby Lucille (nn Lucy) after my grandma that I absolutely adore and he will not budge.  We will hopefully use it as a middle name.

Other names he's vetoed include Adrianna, Charlotte, Lorelei, Olivia & Violet ... and tons of others.

Boy names that I love that DH vetoed (before we found out we were having a girl) include: Henry, Elijah, Julian, Reid, and Austin.  If we'd had a boy his name would have probably been Wesley.

  • DH veto'd any name that did not start with an A *sigh*

We all have A names and he said that our LO would feel left out if she didn't have an A name too (which I think is a bit silly, but he was absolutely adament about it!)

I love classic names that DH said were "old lady-ish"

Thank goodness we weren't having a boy, because we could NOT agree on a boy name at all.  I liked Ascher and Alton - he did not.  We nearly decided on Alec (which is a family name from my Irish side) until he decided he didn't like Alec Baldwin... LOL

I think the Jews that are offended by this are those who take themselves a little to seriously.  Cohen is a common Jewish last name. It's also from Kohen (co-hain) which were the Jewish priests way back when we wore robes and had long beards and lived to be 934 years old, or something like that.

Honestly, why anyone would get upset about it as a kid's name is beyond me. No one gets too riled up about the name Levi and the Levites were also priests.

Amen.  I used to frequent the baby names board for fun but they are now dead to me after unanimously "meh"ing one of my top (unusual--350s on SSA, but not yu-neek) picks for Butterbean but wholeheartedly supporting Caoimhe (pronounced Kee-vah).  CAOIMHE for the love of pete!!!!

  • My top names for this baby are Kellan and Rylan.  DH nixed them both because he says Kellan (omg I just love love love it and love typing it!) would be called "Kellan Heller" or some equally bad version I've Helen Keller'a name, and Rylan sounds like the home builder (Ryland Homes).

But, he also nixed Logan for DS's name at first (he swears he didn't hear me mention it before... Eye-roll) and then a few weeks later suggested it as if he'd come up with it out of the blue.  I'm hoping the same happens this time!!  ;-)

I loved Kellan and was pushing for it this time as well. Then I said it with our last name and realized how stupid they sounded together.
