Babysitters other than family?

For people who don't have local family, where have you found reliable babysitters?

  • Do you have a community message board? I got suggestions from neighbors for ours that way.

  • We primarily use DDs teachers for child care, which works out great.

We have also used a girl from the neighborhood, and the son of one of my coworkers. With those two, I usually stay until DD is asleep because doesn't know them as well and I think she would freak out if I left her alone with them. The plus side is that they are cheaper.

  • We hire a teacher from the kids' daycare center. Before that we had someone we found on care.com or sittercity (I don't remember which). Only used her a few times, though.

  • My neighborhood (North Springfield) has a teen job list. I know it's not the same, but we found our cat sitter on there and love her (and now her brother since she went to college). We've already looked at the list and plan to try out the few girls who do child care when we need a night out.

  • Recommendations from friends mostly. We also have used a teenager who volunteers in the nursery at our church.

  • We are friends with a few people in the neighborhood who also have kids and trade babysitting duties with them. I haven't had to hire a babysitter yet, but one of DH's coworkers lives in the next neighborhood over and has a 15 year old that I would consider hiring, since her parents are so close if she needed help.

  • we have only used two sitters who was not family. both were from our DC. one was a substitute, the other is a regular.

friends have used neighborhood message boards/listservs and gotten referrals from local churches and daycares.

  • We don't have any family in the area, so we went through sittercity.com

There are also a few girls I know from work who babysit, but I haven't used them yet, mostly b/c the sitters I've needed so far were for during the day.
