Tell me about your mornings...

So i'm going back to work November 28th and i'm thinking through how to get ready for work in the morning. Usually, I can get my shower taken care of with the girl in the bouncy chair but i don't have enough time to get makeup on and hair done. I'm trying to figure out how to get ready for work with the little girl in tow. Do you ladies get ready before the little one gets up? or do you have other ideas for how to get everything done with the little one awake?

Any and all suggestions for getting ready for work and getting the little one ready for daycare welcome! TIA!

Re: Tell me about your mornings...

  • Any way you could shower at night? That's what saves me, but I have the kind of hair that can tolerate that! Other than that, I do every possible thing the night before - clothes, bottles when we did those, pump parts, etc. When he was little if I showered at night I had enough time in the bouncy seat to get all the rest done.

  • On days I have to be in the office at a certain time, babywearing saves the day for me.  I shower at night (and not every day) and I am pretty minimal with primping. But, for things like making my lunch, restocking the diaper bag, brushing my teeth, and getting all of our gear out the door--wearing LO keeps him calm and close and keeps me moving quickly. Doing what you can the night before is helpful and delegating to DH (like packing lunch and diaper bag, prepping bottles/pump).

  • I wake up at 5:30 am to shower and get ready before the family wakes up.  I've done this since going back to work with #1.  For me, it's worth it for the 45 minutes of un-interrupted, somewhat peaceful time to myself.  DD #1 gets up around 6:15, DH gets up around 6:25, DD #2 and DS around 6:30 or 6:40.  Then the madness really begins!  Stick out tongue

  • Is your husband not around in the morning? We trade off getting ready and kid duty.

If you're on your own, I recommend using the bouncer, singing songs, and talking to her. You'll learn to be very fast with your morning routine. And if she cries for a few minutes, it will be ok.

  • like others, I shower at night and get everything ready at night; when it's cold enough, I even leave my lunch in the car overnight. In the mornings, absolutely everything is ready to go; often DS will wake up before I am ready for him (DH takes care of DD) and at his age (17mo) it's a hassle b/c he just wants me and it's hard to get ready. When he was a baby, I would get him out of the crib, nurse him, change him and go.

it'll take a few days or weeks to settle into a schedule but it'll all work out!

  • My alarm goes off at 3.  I'm in the shower by 3:30, out by 3:50, dressed by 4:10.  DH gets DS up by 4:15.  From 4:15-4:45 DS is DH's responsibilty so I can get out of the house. I make breakfast, make lunch and get the dog out.  I'm out of the house no later than 4:45 at work by 6 and that includes daycare drop off with a 62 mile commute.

I had issues grasping the concept of how it was all going to work out but its just so routine now.

  • We've always tried to get up before the LOs wake up. Here's our morning routine:

4:15am-5:30am: Wake up and workout (DH and I alternate days and whoever isn't working out sleeps and takes care of the LOs if they wake up early).

    5:30am-6:15am: Get dressed

    6:15am: Wake and dress babies

6:30-6:40amam: Sippy of milk and a few cheerios

    6:40am-7am: Playtime

That's what we currently do. If the babies wake early, we try to keep them in their cribs until at least 6am by giving them toys.

When they first started at daycare at 4 months, they would sleep later. From the time they were born until around 10.5 months, we'd wake them at 5am for a bottle and they'd go back to sleep by 5:15am. Then, DH and I would exercise and get ready for work and wake them up at 6:45am, get them dressed, and head right out the door.

It takes a bit of time but you'll find a routine that works for you. I hate showering at night, but that's one option. I prefer to do it in the morning by just getting up early, but I am a mornign person and love being up before the sunrise anyway.

  • This is all as i suspected - thanks for the input. DH seems to think that i could get ready with DD awake and i just don't think i can do it - her attention span just isn't long enough for me to leave her in a bouncy chair for 30mn. I think i'll try an early wakeup and see how it works out for me (I, also, am not a huge fan of showering at night - however, i'll do what needs to be done, if it comes to that ;-)

  • jitterbug, artlvr and kafunder - i'm gasping at your normal wake up times!

we have a short commute and daycare drop off by 8:30.

when DS was a baby, i got up around 6:30/7. he nursed for a while, i left him in bed wtih DH on mornings when i showered (sometimes i showered in the evening). we left the house around 8:20.

i think my kids are a little less maintenance than others i know. and my house is super small. i'm fine with leaving the baby in the crib while i shower...it's 6 feet away!

also, i have significantly reduced the amount of time i need to get ready in the morning. i wear less make up (and hardly any at all now - just lip gloss and sometimes mascara), can get my hair done in a few minutes, set out my clothes and the kids' clothes the night before, make my breakfast drink the night before, and have any bags that need to go put in the car before i go to bed. i can reasonably get out of the house in 35 minutes after waking up (this includes getting myself up and ready, nursing the baby and getting both kids ready to go as well).
