Not Rolling? (repost from 6-9)

DS rolled a few times in August when he was 3m old and a couple of times since then. When he does tummy time, he really could care less. He weighs 18lbs and he's also very content just hanging out (not sure if his weight has anything to do with it). He will lay there, play with his toys for quite awhile while I try to coax him, then he'll get frustrated and I sit him up. He sits very well on his own and is beginning to pull himself up on things. Has anyone else's lo reached all of these other milestones EXCEPT rolling? DS has his 6m appt on Wednesday, so I'll see what the dr. has to say, but I'm a little anxious.

  • We are in a similar situation. DS is also about 18 lbs and has only rolled a few times. He hates tummy time and fusses a lot, but does a good job pushing up with his arms. He is still a little wobbly sitting unassisted though. I'm not worried, he'll get it once he's ready. Your DS is probably just fine Wink

  • If he's doing all that other stuff I wouldn't be worried. Ask your Dr, but I bet your LO is doing it before you know it.

  • My first skipped rolling.  If he sits he's moved onto other milestones.  I wouldn't worry.

  • Mine has rolled from tummy to back on accident several times, but never on purpose and not at all recently. She's really interested in sitting but can't do it on her own yet so I hold her. I'm not that concerned.

  • My LO has never rolled, but can sit up quite well.  I asked the doctor about it yesterday at his 6 month appointment and she said it's more important that he can do the fine motor skills (i.e. manipulating objects and such) than the gross motor skills (such as rolling).  She said not to worry and he'll roll eventually.

  • Both of my boys sit up unassisted really well. N has been a rolling fool since 3-4 months or so, but I can count on one hand how many times E has rolled from back to belly. He just has no interest in it because he doesn't like tummy time.

  • I discussed the same thing with the pediatrician last Monday at DD's 6 month appointment. (She's been occasionally rolling from belly to back since 3 months, but has never once rolled back to belly.)  My doctor said since DD is sitting well independently, she was not concerned at all.  She also said lots of kids skip rolling at this age and go straight to sitting and crawling.  Apparently rolling has become less important as a developmental milestone since babies are now placed on their backs for sleep.

  • My DS has only rolled a few times both directions but generally hates tummy time and has not rolled over in a few weeks. I am a little bit concerned but he has been sitting up on his own for about a month now and has been reaching all the other milestones. It is good to hear that my LO is not the only one.
