NBR-I am livid at my mother

This is a post and run.... many irons in the fire right now.

Apparently my mother has had a stroke.  A very very mild one.   Slurred speech on Saturday night but she didn't go to the doctor until this morning.  BP was through the roof so they took her to the hospital in an ambulance.  My aunt (her sister in law) is on the ambulance team so SHE's the one who called me this afternoon to tell me what's going on.  NOT my mother.  She didn't want to bother me or my sister with this.

GOOD GOD, WOMAN!  She'll call 5 times over a shirt at the mall she saw, but won't pick up the goddam phone to tell me she's had a stroke.

Re: NBR-I am livid at my mother

  • Surprise I would be livid too.

I hope she's okay. Please keep us updated on her condition.

  • Ok.. I've calmed down some now... but still pretty pissed off.

It seems she's had some sort of TIA, Transient Ischemic Attack, which my grandmother also had frequently.   Kind of a mini stroke.  It has only affected her speech, or so it seems.  No other problems reported, other than the fact she's horribly carsick from the ambulance ride. But even with that I'm skeptical, since it's been 12 hours or so since the trip to the hospital and she still says she feels sick to her stomach.   I guess her BP was through the roof and now I find out she hasn't been taking any BP meds or cholesterol meds for quite a while now.  No idea why.

Apparently late Saturday night, she started the slurred speech but she and her boyfriend just thought she was really tired and they just went to bed.   Sunday it was the same, but I have NO CLUE why they didn't go see the doctor then.  I guess she figured it was a TIA and that her speech would correct itself in a few hours.. just like it did for my grandmother.

But to wait until friggin Monday morning to see someone about this is ridiculous.

  • Ah hugs....it's hard having a family member that resembles an ostrich. It makes me bonkers when they think it will just go away. I was going through this with my grandma last year, so I know how you feel. Hope it gets better for you at least. At least she's seen someone and is getting it treated.
  • I am sorry. That is frustrating and scary.

I am the only one who lives away from my parents, so they often don't tell me about things. Not as serious as a stroke though.

  • you know they do stuff like this just to get back at us for our teenage years!  Hope she's OK!
  • First of all I am glad that your mom is doing well now!

As for not telling me bad news...Me and my parents live on different continents. And it often happens that they are not telling me that someone is sick, that my grandma was hospitalized, that my friend's mother died...!!! We have had fights over those things, and they still keep doing it. Their excuse: they don't want me to stress out. Well, I am 10 times more upset when I find out about this things later on from someone else. Yes, so I understand how you feel about your mother not telling you that she had a stroke.

    Hugs.

  • I don't know who I would be more angry with, my mother who many have been cognitively impaired at the time or the boyfriend who let her lay there and did nothing.  But it sounds like something my mother would do too.

  • Your mom needs to marry my dad.  He sends me a million forward emails and all sorts of stuff about his sports teams but tell me about his skin cancer, oh no.  He'll just take himself for the five million skin grafts.  TYVM.

Parents!  What would they do without us?

And I hope that your mom is better soon.

  • I hope your mom is better soon.

What is it with parents? My dad had his first stroke two years ago. My mom was in bed sleeping, my dad was in the next room watching TV, he had a mild stroke while my mom was sleeping. He didn't tell her until the next morning when they got up, and that was only because she asked him what was wrong. His speech was slurred, he didn't seem himself. She asked him what was wrong and he said he THOUGHT he had a stroke. They had been up & about for a couple of hours at that point. She asked him why he didn't say anything about it & his response was..."I didn't want to bother anyone." Please--bother someone for that!
