Mastitis :(

This has been the hardest day ever. 102.4 fever, H had a hard time leaving work to help me...I saw a NP at 4 and have antibiotics (now I'm scares of thrush :() and Tylenol. Anyway, just venting and looking for commiseration. It's so incredibly painful. I felt like I was hit by a bus. Ugh :(

Re: Mastitis :(

  • I'm sorry S.  I hope you feel better, I've only had a clog, which was painful, but not as much as mastitis.

  • So, so sorry. I had it and also felt like I'd been hit by a bus...I could hardly stand up.  As soon as the antibiotics kicked in though I felt 10 times better so hopefully it's the same for you!

  • I'm sorry... I've had it more times than I care to remember and it's awful. Usually the antibiotics helped within 8 hours or so (at least enough so that I didn't feel like walking death). I hope they kick in quickly for you, and remember, a lot of times mastitis is your body's way of telling you your doing too much... Regarding the thrush, make sure to take some probiotics or eat some yogurt. Our pediatrician also recommended putting just a sprinkle of it on the nipple too to help minimize the chance of yeast/thrush with your LO.

  • Ditto all the others. It is AWFUL! Good news is, once you get the antibiotics, it works fairly quickly. And huge ditto on the probiotics. GL! Hope everything starts working soon!

  • I would like to add (having had it 9 times in a year) that a bath *always* helped me. As Celyn likes to point out: mastitis is your body telling you to slow down ;-)

So I would run a warm (ok, hot - I like 'em hot) bath up to my chin and just let my boobies float for 20-30 minutes while I read a good book. At the end I would massage the infect boob and express milk into the water.

Whether it actually helps treat you or not...there's really no harm in being alone in the bathtub for 30 minutes, now is there?

    feel better!

  • Oh no!  I hope you feel better soon, but definitely take Teri's advice and take it easy...
