And by slight, I mean cataclysmic. While I have been running somewhat consistently for years, including a marathon and many halfs, I unfortunately had dropped my mileage right before I got pregnant. So I have been doing what I can to stay in some sort of jogging shape, though getting slower every day! Yesterday, I jogged 3mi on the treadmill with a few walk breaks here and there, and shortly afterward (just as I was leaving the gym), I started to get MAJOR stomach cramps. It was hard for me to tell if it was digestive or contractions, and I got kind of freaked out! I jumped in the car to go home, and they got worse. I ran in the door to the bathroom and had horrible watery diarrhea (sorry!!!). Then I felt fine, and of course drank a ton of water afterward.
This has happened to me a few times while pregnant, though this was probably the worst. Is this normal? I have gotten runner trots before, but this was definitely on a new level. Maybe it's what I ate beforehand? I don't think I pushed too hard, but maybe? I tried to keep my HR under 140 and breathing under control. Just want to make sure I'm not doing anything that could harm my LO!
Re: *Slight* digestive problem after jogging yesterday (sorry, TMI)
During pregnancy, the body has to have smooth muscle tissue begin to relax as this surrounds the uterus while it is enlarging. Unfortunately, the entire digestive system is also smooth muscle, that is why there are so many GI issues that happen during pregnancy, including watery diarrhea. It's normal both for the runner and the nonrunner.
You can talk to your OB next visit about it to get his/her assurance. For the most part, if you're wearing a HR monitor to keep it below 150 BPM & you're not experiencing any other cramping or bleeding then it's probably normal and to be expected. Happy running, hot MAMA!!
Yes - you're normal - consider yourself blessed because it sure as heck beats the alternative!!!!
That said, instead of watching the heart rate monitor, pay attention ONLY to how you're feeling during and after your workouts. Listening to your body is the best thing you can do. Also, pay attention to the feeling you had and just go sit right away instead of being out in the car and having to run back in..
Unfortunately, I think what you're experiencing is normal. I have the same issues, and while I had them occasionally pre-pg, now I have issues after/during nearly every run. Actually, recently it's been a very unfortunate combo of (TMI) diarrhea and constipation... you really really don't want that, trust me!! Keep up the good work mama!
