NBR: Tile/Grout

How do you clean your tile and grout?  When I got my steam mop, I had high hopes that it would solve the problem but I don't think it does and you still need to get down once in a while and scrub the floors.  Our kitchen/laundry/spare room tile is all like a beige with tanish color in spots, so I think it's supposed to disguise dirt (but that also makes me think it looks dirty when its not) and it has some parts to it that are slightly raised so I think that adds to looking dirty too.  One of our bathrooms and the back room have white tile-why did the previous homeowners do white?  I can't keep it clean, they're both high traffic rooms!  I've heard of using a heavy duty grout cleaner then resealing it-anyone do that?

Re: NBR: Tile/Grout

  • We have tiles that have a sort of natural stone look, they are a light terracotta.  The grout is light brown, but it is definitely stained and darker in spots.

The only thing that works for me, is Magic Eraser.  It is so annoying to clean.

When I had white grout I needed to clean at my mom's, I made Ajax or Bon Ami into a paste and scrubbed.

However, the new grout like I have, you're not supposed to use acidic stuff, I think it warns about wearing down the grout, but I am so desperate for ideas too.

  • We have white grout in the bathroom...around the toilet.  I potty trained one boy here and the previous owner had 2 or 3 boys.  It's NASTY and embarrassing.

Oh see that's something I would never have thought about! Again, why go with white in the bathroom?!

  • Omg this is so funny. I just spent nap time scrubbing the grout in our half bath. I used a chemical cleaner...dep I think? And a grout brush. Seems to work ok...but I may try to find a steel brush. We have white grout and no one ever sealed it. I'd love to get it white and seal it before Evan's party on Saturday. Our half bath is so oddly shaped with a corner sink so I can't even put a mat in there to cover some of it up. White grout it beyond dumb. We tiled our kitchen floor and used deep gray tiles and deep gray grout...it shows crumbs more but the grout never looks dirty! Haha..
  • The only places we have tile and grout is in our tiny bathrooms.  I recently used the clorox bleach pen on the grout and it worked great.  But like I said, it is a tiny room.  As for cleaning, I usually just clean by hand using vinegar/water spray or the clorox wipes, but that is because even the swiffer is too big to move around in there.
  • You need to reseal your grout every 2 years or so.  It is easy, but time consuming.  If you stay on top of keeping it sealed, it is easy to clean when you just mop.  I need to do ours again soon, two of the full baths and the laundry room all have 8" tile.
