NBR: Pride & Prejudice

There was a thread on FB about this because I posted that I LOVE this movie and wanted to update on my favorite. I had watched the most recent Keira Knightley version and the older 1980 version. This weekend I bought the 1995 Colin Firth version. I now conclude that the newest version is my favorite. I think I prefer the chemistry between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy in this one and they actually kiss. Stick out tongue The new version is currently on sale at Amazon for 7.49 or 8.49 for Amazon Instant.

Re: NBR: Pride & Prejudice

  • I love me some P&P. I have not seen the '95 version. I should totally watch it. But I love the passion that Keira Knightely put in to her version, I'm not sure another could take its place.

The '95 version is a commitment since it's a mini-series. I watched it while I cleaned house and folded clothes this weekend. I was also unreasonably annoyed by the curly-cue hair they had in this version.
  • The first one I ever saw (growing up) was the 80's one so that's what I base all others against.  The '95 Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle was much better (and had a more swoon-worthy Darcy IMO).  Keira Knightly's Elizabeth was kind of annoying though... I think it's her accent/lisp that bugs me.

  • I actually really hate the way Keira Knightely played Elizabeth Bennet. I kept seeing a modern-day teenager instead of Jane Austen.  It was annoying. But I'm biased, as you know.  :)  Colin Firth foreva!

  • I was pissed that Lizzie and Mr. Darcy kissed in the movie version, because it was so out of step with the book. But I loved the sets, especially the attention to detail in terms of dirt. I watched the 1980 version with my mom and grandma so many times as a kid  that there will never be another Elizabeth Bennett for me. The Elizabeth in the Firth version was a little smug for my taste, but Firth as Darcy was totally hot.
  • The newest version is my fav too.

DrDarcy is ooohhhhh so handsome.  I think it's his voice.  :::chills:::

  • Semi-related - have you guys seen Becoming Jane? I watched it for the second time a few weeks ago and love it (but I have a serious James McAvoy crush going on).
  • I really did love Becoming Jane actually. Love Love Love.

OMG... (totally off-topic now) and have you seen Atonement (also Knightly and McAvoy)?? SWOON.

I don't want to talk about how many times I've seen Atonement. Particularly the library scene...on repeat.

Elizabeth in the book was a little smug so I thought she played it perfectly. Haven't seen the 1980 version so I can't compare, but I didn't really pay attention to the newest Darcy because I was so distracted by being annoyed with Knightly.  :)

I haven't seen Becoming Jane, but it sounds like I really need to.  I looooove James McAvoy and loved Atonement.

I haven't seen but it seems like I should add it to my list.
  • There should be no actual physical contact like kissing... that ruins the whole mood. You loose the sense of want and desire when you just see it.

boo. I think I'll pass on any later versions of the film.

The newest version doesn't have any kissing until the very very end, after they're married, and it's a beautiful kiss.  :)

  • perhaps I'll give it a go. but i don't make promises of liking it ;)

  • I thought Keira Knightley was too pretty to be Lizzie. She's not supposed to be all that per the book.
