If you have/had a tummy sleeper

When were you comfortable with your LO sleeping on his/her tummy?

Sleep in our house took a dive when I went back to work.  From last Thursday until Friday, Felix would not sleep on his back for more than 30 minutes unless he was next to me (we'd at least get a 3 hour stretch at first, but he had been sleeping 5 hour stretches for a while).  I am not comfortable with him in our bed b/c DH is a moving sleeper and we only have a queen, so I didn't get much sleep at all.  F didn't sleep that great, either. I finally figured out this weekend that he likes to sleep on his side.  He rolled to his back within an hour of being put down, but after his 4:30 feeding this morning, I checked on him at 5:00 and sure enough he was on his tummy.

I've seen him roll from tummy to side several times, but not recently.  Last week DH said he rolled onto his back from his tummy, but just that one time that we know of.  He's pretty strong, but I'm still not comfortable with him sleeping like this since I haven't seen him roll yet.  When I got up about 6:00 this morning, he was huffing and puffing trying to roll over.  I didn't hear him, I just checked on him like I do every morning.  He can't get one of his arms from being straight at his side, otherwise I know he could easily roll.  I put him on his side and he was out.  He woke up for the day about 20 minutes later and DH said he was on his side.

So, WWYD?  I know this is a personal decision, but I can't decide if I should kick DH to the guest room and sleep with F until he rolls consistently or try rolling him to his back after he falls asleep.  I tried this once and he woke up all upset so I left him on his side.  Maybe I didn't wait long enough, I don't know.  I guess I need to invest in a video monitor now so I can always watch him.

Re: If you have/had a tummy sleeper

  • DS was a tummy sleeper. I was okay with it since I knew he could lift his head or move to his side. He slept A LOT better on his tummy or side.

  • This is tough, I remember!  DS slept much better on his tummy, from very early on.  Unfortunately, I think many babies do.  I got to the point where, when I was home with him, I'd let him nap on his tummy, because he was in the living room with me, but at night I'd put him on his back.  I mentioned it to his pedi, who basically wouldn't recommend letting him sleep on his tummy at night, but basically said, "well, once he starts rolling, you can't really prevent it".

So anyway, do you think you might be able to use some sort of sleep positioner to put in front of him?  Since he can roll from back to side, and he sleeps well on his side, maybe you can position something to prevent him from rolling all the way to his belly?  Personally I wouldn't do the whole letting him sleep in bed with me thing, because I know myself and I wouldn't get good sleep knowing he was in bed with me, even if DH were in another bed.  I might also consider an Angel Care monitor for peace of mind...

  • L would roll from back to belly and lift his head like it was tummy time. I put a sleep positioner in his bed - I think that's what they're called? Basically has two bolster pillows on each side to kind of contain him. It worked pretty well for a few weeks until he was able to roll over that too:/ one day he finally figured out that he should just lay his head down. If he has good head control I think he'll be ok, but it's ultimately with what you feel comfortable.

  • ooh, the angelcare monitor sounds great!  I'm definitely going to look into that.  And you're right Amy, it's not like I get any sleep when he's next to me.  Especially since I randomly heard 2 different stories last week of people rolling over on their babies in bed.

I feel a little better after reading the responses because he does have great head control.  I guess it's obvious but he is no longer swaddled.  Part of the problem last week may have been b/c he was swaddled with arms out and kept waking up pissed with his legs in the crib slats.  He was definitely trying to roll from his back.

  • We got our angel c a r e monitor off of eBay and used it for C and now for E. it works great and gives us peace if mind. E sleeps on her back at night but on her tummy for naps.
