Birthday Party Favors

I'm leaning towards not doing them, as the general feeling is they are just crappy little items you don't want, right?

But on the other hand ... I kinda want to do some kind of favor.

So what kind of (realistic) favor would you like to see at a kid's birthday party? What's the best favor you (your child) has ever come home with?

ETA: The average age of the kids going to be there is 3-4, with a couple of older and a couple of younger kiddos thrown in.

Re: Birthday Party Favors

  • My fav was a party where there were a bunch of little Dr. Seuss board books and all the kids could pick a book when they went home.

We'll be doing this for DS's first (doing a Seuss theme!).

Food is another good favor because then it gets eaten. Anything interactive is also a win (stickers, etc...) but that may just be for the older kiddos.

    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • i usually dont like the favors we get at parties, but also felt weird doing nothing for guests. for ruby's party this weekend, we made a "mix tape" of her favorite songs for each family. it's a good mix of kid songs and kid friendly grown up songs that we listen to together.

eta: rssnlvr is wise. food is always appreciated for sure. we did cookie mixes in ball jars last year and i got lots of compliments. and i LOVE the book idea. i wish we went to parties with books as favors!

This is what I was going to say... we went to a party and the hostess burned a bunch of CD's with her kiddo's favorite songs, songs that went with their theme, etc.  It was cute, seemed pretty easy and DD loves listening to it!

I try really hard to do favors that can realistically be used because I too hate that little filler crap. Some ideas for what I've done in the past: beach ball w/water bottle (for swimming party), A small loaf of banana bread and mini-bunch of banana for DS' Monkey/banana party, a small tote with a bowling ball on it and some fun socks used during bowling for DD's bowling party. For DD's most recent pool/slumber party at a hotel I got each little girl (only 4) a night gown so they were matching and got to take it home.

I try to look for something that goes with the theme. Like DS's next party will probably be cars so I will probably look for a car coloring book w/ colors and maybe one of the cars for each kid. What is the theme for DD's party? I would no favor over plastic crap people will throw away immediately.

  • I love these ideas! I'm leaning towards some kind of food. That sounds like a great idea, especially since a lot of the guests are adults.

Rosie, I think  you have fancier parties than I get to go to!

  • I just did bubbles and printed Thank You labels for them to match the theme. We only had a handful of kid-guests at the party and they all loved them.
  • I don't like all the little trinket things but DD looooves getting them. For her 4th, I did princess cookies and the girls got a foam crown they could decorate and the boys got little hats they could decorate.  I put jewels and stickers in the bags with the crowns/hats and cookies.

I love making and receiving favors. I'd be pretty bummed out if my guests thought the favors I put so much work into were "crappy little items they didn't want" but I suppose it's inevitable that some folks will feel that way.  CDs, books, food/snacks, take-home craft projects, are all good favors IMO.

that kazoo is a gift that keeps on giving. we even played with it this morning and it's a regular instrument in the edmonson family band :)

  • We did little snacks and bubbles at M's party for favors.

M's theme was polka dots and was around Easter, and depending on the age of the kids we had different things in plastic Easter eggs that were in a polka dot gift bag. We had bubbles (round), yogurt melts (round), cherrios (round), m&ms (round), etc. I don't remember all the round food related things, but that gives you an idea.

Ditto!  I put a lot of time and thought into mine.

Some of our faves- CDs with music, puzzle and book, food is always a fave with the kids, crayons (I've made them in the past by melting the crayons and pouring into molds), coloring books, stickers. Or sometimes something they used at the party becomes the favor.  One year the kids made mini pizzas during the party and their favor was the apron, chefs hat and rolling pin they used.

ETA- thought of some others- bubbles, sand toys in beach buckets, train whistle and conductor hat.  Items for dress up are always big hits.

  • For Em's first birthday I made embroidered towels with each kids name on them, a French Patamoyo children's CD and then gave them the Dr. Seuss Circus book.

For Linc's first birthday each kid/baby got a mustache/bow shirt, crayon mustaches, bubbles and mustache cups.

2nd Birthday- Princess wands, paper dolls, nail polish and stickers. The boys got boy toys but I can't remember what.
