So im kinda freaking out. i just hit 39 weeks and at my last appt my dr looks at my chart after telling me my ultrasound and NST came back perfect (back story - i have high blood pressure but had it before i became pregnant, it was high a few times but hes upped my medicine and its been under control for weeks now but hes been sending me for weekly ultrasounds and NSTs all of which have been perfect) so he says ill see you next week and at your next appt youll be 39 weeks and well want to induce you...well he totally caught me offguard there. I wasnt expecting to hear about induction until at least my due date. so he came back in the room and i asked him why and basically he said well we dont like you to go over your due date. he said hed check me at my next appt and we could talk but he said just be prepared i might keep you after you appt (for induction) i do NOT want to be induced if its not necessary. I will have my husband with my at my appt this time and i wont be so blindsided but im just at a loss every where i look unless there is a reason so induce they dont so im asking for opinions from you ladies...has anyone been induced at a little over 39 weeks for no reason other than they dont want you to go over your due date?? Our birthing classes told us that most first time pregnancies go after their due date. Im gonna talk to more to him at my next appt and really try to advocate against it but its 4 days away and im going nuts thinking about it

please help! thanks
Re: HELP - Dr wants to Induce!?
I would share your feelings with your doctor. HOwever, realize that most doctors don't "offer" to do an induction prior to 40 weeks for the hel* of it. If it's recommended by your experienced doctor, do it.
I was induced (elective induction at my request) at 40w 3d and it went great! Dr broke my water--7 1/2 hours of labor, 30 minutes of pushing and I was done. My induction went smoother than going into labor on my own with my DD at 39w.

This certainly makes a difference. In that case I would say go with his reccomendation. Maybe he should have been clearer in his explanation to you -- but clearly there is a reason for the induction.
Ahhhh, this. Now if this is the case, then I'd ask for elaboration. You can probably still ask to wait for a few days after and if its a no go, then opt for induction.
Obviously everyone and every pregnancy is different, but for what it's worth, I had HELLP with my first kiddo. I'm 28 weeks with my second and my OB is just monitoring me more closely and has not said a word about this pregnancy ending in induction, yet. He just wants to keep a very close eye on my blood pressure and take things as they come. HELLP is definitely nothing to play around with, as pp mentioned, but definitely talk to you OB about it and get the whole story and all your options.
Lastly - I was induced with my first, at 35 weeks, and everything went about as smoothly as it possibly could have considering the circumstances. Sometimes inductions go well!
It sounds to me like your doc wants to cut the worst of the worst risks for you and like the PP mentioned, didn't fully elaborate on. High BP is not something to mess with! I had a cousin who had to have a quick in the danger zone delivery because of it and spent a LONG time in the hospital recovering
An induction is not as bad as everyone freaks you out to believe - especially those who are pushing "all natural" or "medication free" deliveries. I'm a hypnotherapist by training, and I had an induction, if not for my DH not tolerating labor well (kiddo took 36 hours and was fine the whole time, DH not so much), I probably would have gone med-free. All that they're going to do is literally put the smallest amount of medication to help "ripen" things down there or strip your membranes. It's not painful or anything like that at all. I had no idea what was going to happen when I started my induction and was like "WTF, that's IT?!?!?"... I was expecting it to be some big scary process, but it's not like anyone says. L&D by itself will be what your body and baby are meant to have. Take your mind out of it, and just let your body do its job.
Based on these risk factors alone I wouldn't think twice about induction and would be 100% on board with his recommendation.
Let him know that you would prefer to not be induced, however, most women with high BP develop Hellp or PRE-E in the later stages of pregnancy and he's trying to help you avoid complications. If you we 37 or even 38 weeks I'd agree, but at 39 weeks, I would go with it. You'd hate to wait until 40+ weeks then end up with an emergency c-section due to pre-e. There are pros and cons with it either way.
