C-sections

pain during surgery?

I was just wondering if anyone else experienced the same pain I did because I have asked a couple people I know and they didn't and I am not sure what exactly it was that caused the pain.... anyway:

I had an epidural before (un-planned c-section) and was completely numb, especially after whatever they gave me for surgery. I didn't feel them cut me or anything. But then after they cut me they used some kind of tool, I think to hold open the hole, that dug into my pelvis (I can only assume this is what happened, since I couldn't see and could only feel and am only going by what my husband said). It felt like something pulling at the bone and digging into it and it hurt bad. I started saying "OW! That hurts!" and they kinda started rushing but kept saying that it was normal. I don't really remember feeling it after I heard my LO cry though. Could have been the emotions or they removed whatever was causing the pain.

Anyone else experience that?

Re: pain during surgery?

  • That's an odd thing to feel.

I was super numb and felt nothing but tingles.

  • I didn't feel what you felt, but my spinal didn't take, so I ended up being knocked out.  It was the worst pain I have ever experienced.

  • I did! I was told some 'pulling feelings' and pressure was normal but dang it knocked the wind out of me several times.
  • I never felt anything. I was so numb that I didn't even feel any pressure or tugging that some women describe feeling.

  • I literally didn't feel anything, no pressure or anything.  After a very long labor and pushing it was great to be so numb!  I'm so sorry you felt pain, OP!
  • Yes! I had lots of very uncomfortable pulling/tugging and pain. I had been pushing for a couple hours so they had to really shove my DD back up to start the c/s. I had to use my relaxation and breathing techniques just to get through the surgery!

  • No, I didn't feel any pain during the surgery. I could feel some tugging and pulling during both csections which is normal.

  • I didn't feel anything until after DS was out. I felt tons of tugging and pulling and, it was ok at first, but then as it continued (which felt like forever) I started crying. The anesthesiologist gave me 100mcg of IV Fentanyl which was amazing. I was drowsy, but I didn't feel anything after that and I still was able to see my baby. The next day the anesthesiologist told me that my spinal was placed a little lower than normal due to my "small laminar spaces" and that's why I was able to feel some of the pressure/pain of being sewed back up.

  • I had a very poorly placed epidural for my induction. I kept telling the nurses that I could feel all the contractions on the left side- they kept explaining it away saying it was pooling from how I was laying etc.

Fast forward to my C-section- they gave me a pretty big bump right as they were beginning so I didn't feel much initially, but as soon as they pulled her out I could feel EVERYTHING on the left side. I immediately started panicking and hyperventilating- they had to give me a local on that side to finish the surgery.

    It was a nightmare.

  • I felt stuff during mine.  I felt them "rearranging" things as I say before she was pulled out.  I equate the pain to someone grabbing your arm roughly.  I of course felt them pushing her down and out but that didn't hurt and neither did the stiches I could feel him pulling.  The worse pain tho was after she was out and they were cleaning things out.  I yelled.  I would've jumped off the dang table if I could've moved my legs!  At that point they changed their tune from she's just feeling pressure to I'm sorry we're almost done...  And then the anesthetist started giving me pain meds in my iv.  Some people's spinals just don't work right.  Mine took forever to take affect and then started wearing right back off.  Yours might not have numbed you completely quite yet.  But they worked speedy quick during a c/s anyway; that's totally normal.  Once they make the cut the baby's out in 5 minutes.
