Fostering resources?

Hi ladies!

So my husband and I are in the waiting phase with a small agency in our area for DIA.  We love the agency and knew that this process could take awhile, and we are still totally committed to that process.

However, recently I have been having some issues at work (mainly just not being happy, being unable to see eye to eye with my boss, etc), and have been thinking more and more about quitting and perhaps pursuing fostering.  The main reason we did not foster from the start was that I wanted to be sure I would have time to care for the kids (and it seemed crazy overwhelming to arrange childcare when first getting to know this child!), but if I quit, it is seeming more and more like something we might like to do.

However, being at the beginning stage of this, I now am at the phase of looking for insight/advice about fostering as well as any good resources you might be able to recommend about foster or foster to adopt programs. We live in Indiana, if that makes a difference, or if any other Hoosiers have worked with DCS fostering.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Fostering resources?

  • I would think the first step would be to contact your local DCS. I worked for DFPS in Texas, and I don't know if you guys do it the same way, but in Texas the first step of fostering and/or adopting is going to an information meeting to get an idea of what to expect, and the whole process. You will also meet other people going thrum ugh the same thing that can offer support and advice, etc.

  • I really like Fosterpodcast.com for something a little fun but still informative...

You'll need to figure out what your option are- just county or are there agencys in your area... then figure out which option best fits what you want to do, and attend a info session...

Our story is kinda similar to yours. I wanted to be able to stay home but dh wasnt' sold- we started foster care, had our first placement for 4 months, during which time I continued to work. When we got our second placement is when I quit work to be home with them...At the point of 2 kids there was too much running for apts and visits and paperwork that I would of actually been at work very little.

    Good luck!

  • In our area, our DFS office is over worked.  We are with a contract agency.  The first thing I did (after lurking and posting here for 6 months) was contact them to set up a time for a worker to come out and figure out what we needed to do and what it entailed.

I would also start reading blogs of foster parents. That might help too, to get an insight into the expectations and the timelines that they experienced.

    Good luck!

  • Sorry it took me so long to see this!  Busy weekend.

We are located in South Bend area (which has actually be somewhat frustrating...for a larger-ish city, they don't seem to have that many agencies with offices there.  Our adoption agency is based in Ft. Wayne (2.5 hours away).
