Success after IF

At what age do they learn to blow their noses?

I just feel like it would be so helpful to congested babies if they can blow their noses!  When can I expect this?

  • My boys still dont.  If you ask them to blow they blow like you would a candle.

  • Who knows!?  Jacob still doesn't understand.  He'll wipe his nose with a tissue and make the blowing noise, but its from his mouth.  Sigh.

PS - I have a cold and I have seriously blown my nose like eleventy billion times in front of him these past 2 weeks.  So, its not monkey-see monkey-do.

  • LOL, not sure b/c I'm still waiting, if we ever get there I'll let you know.  I also cannot seem to teach him to spit out the toothpaste or the water we rinse with after we brush.

  • My MIL had some hilarious commentary this weekend about how her youngest was a "good blower" and started around 18 months (after wiping my kid's snotty nose for the eleventy billionth time)...but...somehow I don't see that happening in my house.
  • DS started on his own but is not very effective.

  • I think DD started blowing her nose a little before 2. It is so amazingly wonderful to finally ditch the sucker, but sometime I am still anal and use it. I really feel it helps keep her colds from getting worse.

  • Brady is 3.5 and still doesnt do it. Usually when I tell him to blow out his nose he sucks in. But I do know kids his age that can, I guess it depends on the child.
  • Dillon kind of does, but not with enough force to get anything really out of there. H had a cold about a month ago so D went around blowing... But now that he is the one that is sick, he will do a half attempt at it then run away with the tissue.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • My 3 year old can blow her nose better than my 7 year old, but it's still not enough.
  • Hayden is like Charmcity's Jacob. We blow in front of him and he likes tissues but blows a rasberry into them out of his mouth, not his nose. However someone on here suggested having them practice by blowing into a straw with their nose to make bubbles.

  • DS started blowing his nose at about 18 months or so. But he's 3 now and refuses most days even though he knows how.

This DS#1 sometimes gets it but most of the time he is confused by the request to blow his nose.

  • C started getting it around 20 months or so.  We had an amazing nanny who must have had some trick to get her to learn to blow her nose.  But, when she hit the terrible 3s, she completely regressed and would just blow in when blowing her nose (so basically breathe).  Fortunately, she figured it out again (a few months later after we had about 6 months straight of a cold/congested nose).

  • Mine probably started in the 2-2.5 range.  They still aren't terribly effective, but it's better than nothing.

  • We got her blowing at about 2.

We practiced when she wasn't sick, but lighting a candle, and having her blow it out with her nose alone, telling her to keep her mouth closed. Took a couple of tries but she figured it out.

We reinforced it with the blow bubbles using a straw in the nose trick too.

  • A little before 2.  A lot of this has to do w/ our awesome daycare though.

  • DS was able to do it shortly after he turned two.  I think it's because he always has a cold from daycare so he just learned early- lol.

  • Mine was doing it at 15 months, but everyone at the day care found that really, really odd.
  • Jack is doing it now. I started by showing him how I blow through my nose and saying blow, then added the tissue. Before this he just thought tissues were toys or torture devices. It actually didn't take to long before he figured it out himself. I love that he can do it, saves me the headache of suctioning which he HATES!!
