i need a good breast pump. Preferredly a medela , but I just can't drop $300 on a pump this close to christmas with 2 other kids in the house, especially considering I don't know how well bfing will go this time. Would you purchase a gently used pump from ebay and purchase all new tubing and be comfortable? Or would you go with a cheaper pump and probably end up not being able to use it past 3-5 months
INFO - I would like to bf and pump for at least the first 6 monts. I go back to work at 8 weeks which means I will be pumping at least 4 times per day. I will not need a pump for another child as this is definitely my last child. WWYD?
Anyone else have any other pump options or recommendations that could work for my needs?
Re: come in, i need your opinoins
I wouldn't buy from eBay or CL.
Does anyone you know have a pump? I would feel more comfortable buying used if I knew the pumps history. Even though used pumps aren't recommended at all really.
Is there anywhere near you that offers hospital grade pump rentals?
Renting might be a good option for you, at least until you figure out if pumping will work out for you. My hospital offers rentals. You can find a list of rental places through Medelas website.
I would probably go with a less expensive one if this is your last baby and you will only need it for a few months.
Also at my breastfeeding class the nurse told me that it is not recommended that you use a used breast pump because some of the small pieces parts can't be properly sterilized and cleaned and there is a risk of disease transmission (she mentioned HIV). Just something to think about-I was not aware of that before she said something. I'm still gonna use my used pump (from my sister) but I'm not sure after hearing that that I'd be comfortable purchasing one on ebay or from someone I didn't know.
Breastfeeding and pregnant!
I was thinking this too... I know my hospital has pump rentals so maybe you could check and see if your's does and what there policy is.
I am willing to spend about $200 but would prefer to stay around the $150 area.
I'm planning to EP and a gently used PISA is what I'm planning to use this time around (DH found it at a rummage sale, tested out the suction/motor, $40)... Check some of your local used baby stores or those big baby swap meet type things. There was one that DH & I went to that they literally had a NIB PISA that no one had ever even opened up for $100. I've got to order the tubing for the one I got, but I'd definitely go that route first...
With our first, I EP with a hospital grade rental. SO not worth the money that the rental cost us!!
OMG I AM AN IDIOT!!!!
I have a 20% off coupon at home for BRU, Maybe if I can find the Ameda or the Avent there, the 20% off would put it in my price range.
Thanks ladies, I knew I'd find some good answers here.
I've found both of those to be overpriced at BRU, so that with the coupon, you still end up spending more than the price I've seen on Amazon. Walmart has a great price on the Avent every now and then. I've seen it as low as $149 online.
Amazon always seems to have the best price on that pump.
You can get this one at Walmart for around $70 and it has gotten pretty good reviews as well. Not as high as Medela but it comes with a 3 month warranty which many don't have any warranty from what I have seen.

Also, I make sure that your insurance doesn't cover all or part of one- I eventually found that mine would, but they certainly didn't make that info easy to find.
thanks ladies I am checking out amazon and walmart now.
I really wish mine did, but it's on the list of exclusions. Of course they would exclude something people will actually want/need. Gees.
And Cam...I noticed they are the same price on Amazon & Walmart right now, but with Amazon, you don't have to pay tax. That will save you a little bit of dough.
My company actually has a breast pump loaner pool, FREE! Which I think is awesome. However, there is a waiting list for them, of course. So I went to the Medela website, as suggested by PP, and found a company called Inspired Solutions. They rent breast pumps out and have HUNDREDS available in my area. I don't live in a major urban area, so I was shocked. Anyway, give them a call!
P.S. Maybe I'm still too immature to have a baby, because this image really made me laugh! Is it just me??
This is what I was going to say. My insurance will cover it--or at least the cost of the pump goes towards my deductible. I do have to purchase it at a medical supply company however, and they provided me with locations that would work.
I pumped for 10 months using a single manual hand held pump from Target. It was less than $50 and worked great. This was back when I worked full time, so I'd take 10-15 min breaks and pump a bottle full a few times a day. I've never used an electric pump... too expensive IMO.
I used this Avent one: https://www.target.com/p/Avent-Manual-Breast-Pump/-/A-13358015
I got the Ameda Purely Yours from Amazon for $150. Take it from someone who has been pumping exclusively for almost 2 months. It works as well as the hospital grade pump (which was also an Ameda). I'm getting like 50 ounces a day from it. I highly recommend it. if you buy it with all the bells and whistles from BRU it's about as much as a Medela but Amazon sells a version that is just the pump and supplies.

and after 82 days in the NICU, our little girl is home!
This, exactly. I wouldn't buy from ebay or CL. Renting might be a good option.
I bought the Avent double electric pump. While I haven't used it, I think it's going to be awesome. I read a ton of reviews on it before purchasing.
I paid $150ish for it on an Amazon special. It's $199 at Target.
You can also look on ebay for new in package pumps...just an FYI. The PISA goes for around $150-$200, brand new, factory sealed, on eBay.
I agree with renting. If you don't have the symphony parts, they run about $40 (at least mine did last year) and rental pricing can varry-mine was $1.25/day.
Also, if I remember correctly, this is the first year that you can deduct the purchase of a breast pump as a medical expense on your taxes. Not sure if that will help at all, but just a little info.
