Foley Inducement

My OB said that inducement for VBAC wasn't a possibility because Pitocin and Cervadil pose too much risk for uterine rupture but he didn't mention anything about induction with a catheter, does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

Re: Foley Inducement

  • I had one with my first induction. It was a generally positive experience I guess...they insert the catheter and inflate it to mechanically dilate your cervix.  It generally gets you to 3 or 4 cm and then falls out. for me it dilated me to 4 cm, but my body obviously wasn't ready since I never got farther.  It may help bring on contractions.... But if it doesn't and you can't have pitocin, I'm not really sure what it gets you, kwim?

Someone posted a research article on my month board a few weeks ago about how foley inductions were as successful as cervadil, and generally led to few problems.  I'll see if I can find it.

  • I had a foley catheter for dilation for my first induction.   It basically mechanically dilates your cervix until the bulb falls out, when you'd be at 3-4.   Mine was in for about 9 hours and the tension they need to apply to get it to come out can be super, super intense.  I subscribe to the Female Patient (it's an OB journal I really, really like) and they recently read an article that talked about how they are just as effective as using drugs to induce but with lower complication rates.  My OB LOVES foley bulbs and is a jedi master at placing them.  Mine didn't work, but I hope you have better luck.  If I find that article I will paste it in this thread (or try).

  • With my 1st pregnancy, I had pre-e and was induced at 37 weeks.  The foley bulb was placed (I was only 1 cm on admission) and I roamed the halls, sat on my birthing ball as it naturally put pressure on my cervix (rather than Cervadil which is a false way to dilate) Once I reached 4 cm, the foley "falls" out.  I was started on Pit then, but once you're 4 cm, they should be able to break your water to get you going.

My induction was fabulous (aside from the epidural being in the wrong spot!) Start to finish, I had delivered my sweet boy in 11 hours! Not too shabby for my first time!

  • I asked about this at our hospital when I was in for observation the other night... they said they only do this for unfortunate events.

  • I had a foley inducement for my VBAC attempt.  The bulb was inserted around 5:00 pm and fell out by 11:00 pm.  When it fell out, I was at 5 cm.  I would absolutely do it again.
