Drop the nap, how old?

How old was your LO when they dropped the nap? It's getting harder for me to get her to sleep, but interestingly she does fine at school. Or if she falls asleep in the car, I can transfer her pretty easily to the crib. But she used to just go to sleep in the crib and now she yaks it up for an hour before falling asleep and doesn't sleep as long as she used to. I still feel like she needs it , but maybe it is going bye bye?

Re: Drop the nap, how old?

  • Alex is 5 and he's actually napping right now.  They are just giving it up in Kindergarten (he's in an all-day Kinder program) and it's been ROUGH.

I know every kid is different but my opinion is to keep trying, keep insisting on that nap.  Once it's gone, it's gone forever... and truly they really do need it until just before age 5.  We've waxed and waned over nap, gone through phases of resistance, but it's one battle that was worth it to me.

  • Andrew was 2 3/4 and Cooper was 2.5.  In both cases we had a few months of nap/no nap and eventually pushed the no nap.  Sort of like the phase to one nap I guess.  In our case when they napped it pushed bedtime back to 9-10pm and that didn't fly in our house.  Just this week Cooper has had 3 days where he's napped and actually gone to sleep as normal so he's been obviously tired.
  • E was around 2.5 when he quit napping most days.  I thought it was too early, but not according to the sleep consultant we've worked with.  Now he will take one if he's sick or occasionally in the car, but that's it!
  • DS napped 2 hours daily, no Issues what so ever with falling asleep at nap, from 14 months to 27 months when he suddenly started just not napping. For the last year he has napped about 50% of the time and just like J it pushed back falling asleep at night every time and I just don't want to do it. Some kids just don't need as much sleep. DS needs 10 hrs per day and has trouble getting more (like can't fall asleep).
  • Thanks all, she fell asleep eventually and slept 1.5 hrs, no problem falling asleep at bedtime, so she probably is not ready to give it up yet, but it may be sooner rather than later. I am wondering if maybe she is just pushing her time back a little, to 1 instead of 12. But Daycare does 12 so I don't want to mess with that schedule that they have. I agree that it is important but also that everyone is different. thanks again.

  • If it doesn't screw with nightime than I'd go with later.  My GF had a DD that napped from 1-4 and then went to bed no problem at 7pm.  I thought it was crazycakes and never would have worked in my house but it worked perfectly for them.

As far as your home vs. daycare, she may be more worn out at daycare therefore making it easier to nap at noon, add in the peer pressure and the routine and that may make it easy for her.  At home she may need to be a bit later and I bet she works it out all on her own.  She's definitely at an age where she can really understand that things go down differently in different environments.

This is us.  Lucas naps from 1 until 4, sometimes 4:30 and still goes down easily at 7pm for the night.

We've had some days where he does the same thing, talks for awhile before falling asleep.  Usually that is when he's overtired or overstimulated.  Rarely we'll have some days where he doesn't nap at all but we keep pushing the nap and for the most part it seems like he needs the sleep.

  • Remind me how old she is?  I think she's under 2, right?  I would hold on to the nap for as long as you can!  Noon seems really early though.  I'd try for 1 PM (even as late as 2 PM).  Home schedule is different from school schedule, so I wouldn't worry too much about their noon nap time.

My older son napped consistently until he was almost 4, and once he turned 4, it was really difficult to get a nap out of him so we gave up.  My younger one had no nap days as early as 2.5 and we did give up on his nap before he turned 3, but that was more a personal choice to keep both kids on the same schedule.  He would have happily continued napping if we let him.

This just sounds like she's pushing back nap time from noon to later so I would hold on tight!  Once naps are gone, they are gone and that is a very sad transition!

  • G dropped his nap shortly after 2. Winter is already not napping most days at 18 months.

  • My DD is a few months shy of 3 and there is no way she is ready to give up the nap. She is mess by 4pm. She naps from about 1-3 and goes to bed at 8.

There are days when she doesn't and she'll sit in her room talking/playing quietly for an hour and it works OK, but she definitely goes to bed an hour or so earlier.

  • B still takes naps, and fights it, but I feel he acts better when he has a nap.  He's going to be 3 in Jan.

I make him do quiet time in his room if he is adamant about no nap.

  • Lilly is hit or miss with her naps lately.  (she turned 2 at the end of October).  If she sleeps in (like till 8:30 or 10:00), then she usually doesn't nap but she still has quiet time in her room.  She plays with her stuffed animals in her crib, lays down a bit, and just really plays and talks to herself.  If she wakes up before 8:30...like 7:30-8:15, then she usually does take a nap...usually a 2-3 hour nap.  She does better on days that she has a nap (during her awake time) but she does also fall asleep a lot faster at night on the days that she doesn't nap.  Days where she has a nap, sometimes she doesn't go down for 30minutes to an hour...she just plays in her crib and then falls asleep.

  • Ok, well that makes sense, it's all over the map, but it sounds like I can try a little later. Thanks again everyone.
