Pain management

I just had my 2nd c/s on 11/1. The hospital released me yesterday (although they weren't going to because my BP spiked the day before and it's still high today). They gave me Percoset to manage the pain, but I am still REALLY hurting. If I don't take 2 Percoset every 4 hours I want to cry. I start off by taking one thinking I'll be ok but I'm still in a lot of pain 30-45 minutes later so I have to take another. They closed my incision with staples this ttime instead of stitches like they did last time. I just don't remember being in this much pain with my son. I plan on calling my OB tomorrow, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for what I can do to relieve some of the pain. I don't want to keep having to take 2 Percosets every 4 hours.

Re: Pain management

  • Honestly, if 2 percocet is what you need to not be in pain, take 2. Pain is funny, you need to stay on top of it or it will get out of control. You won't still need 2 every 4 hours for much longer, but it's really not doing you any good to try and tough it out- take what you need. Also, pain can make your BP go up.

When you talk to your OB maybe you could ask about trying something else? I took Norco and it worked really well. People respond differently to meds.

  • You need to stay ON TOP of the pain and then once on top you can think about cutting back, but you just had MAJOR surgery and catching up to being pain free is not fun for you or your baby. They can sense when mommy is stressed.

I had my second c/s on 11/3 and am still in the hospital (common to stay here 7 days) and I am still on pain meds. One thing that worked well for me earlier in the week when I had to wait for my next dose of pain meds was an ice pack over the incision area. The nurses had suggested that.

Also, have you had a BM yet or lately? Sometimes that can make things uncomfortable down there -- keep taking lots of colace to keep everything smooth!

I had staples this time and sutures last time. I am actually recovery a lot quicker than last time but last time I labored for 33 hrs and this one was no labor yet a complication with my poor baby. So, I have had to force myself to walk a lot more than I probably would have in the beginning so I can go see my baby in another hospital

  • First of all, there's no shame in taking pain medication when you need it. If you need to take 2 Percocets every 4 hours to stay on top of it, DO IT and DON'T FEEL GUILTY!

If that's not enough, call your MD and see if you can take 600mg-800mg of Ibuprofen. I got sent home with both Percocet and Ibuprofen to manage my pain and they also used both in the hospital. They're OK to take together from an interaction standpoint, but check with your MD just in case.

Everyone has different pain tolerances and it takes people different amounts of time before weaning off pain meds is a possibility. I tried weaning myself off the Percocet as soon as I got home and was miserable until I started taking my medication around the clock. Being in pain isn't good for you or your baby. I hope you feel better soon!

  • I took 2 percocets every 4 hours for a week after DS1 then went to px motrin for another week or 2. My doctor said that is perfectly fine and that staying on top of hte pain is more important.

  • Take what you need.  I also took motrin which helped a ton.
  • Please do take your meds...  There's no point in hurting right now!  Take care of yourself.  : )

BTW, I didn't take any percocet, but I did have tylenol (2 extra strong) every four hours and on the second hour, I had to take ibuprofen (400mg).  It did the trick for me!

  • Are you taking anything for cramping? I could tell a difference when I wasn't taking my painkiller and my prescription strength aleve.

  • I agree with everyone else--take your 2 Percocet and take them before you are in pain.  Are you taking any ibuprofen?  I was taking rx strength ibuprofen along with my Percocet and that worked great for me.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

  • I alternated 3 Tylenol and 3 Ibuprofen every 3 hours and took the Percocet before bed. As long as I didn't miss any doses that was more than adequate.

  • As everyone else suggested, keep on top of it. FWIW, I was prescribed percs when I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth taken out, and it didn't do a damn thing for me. I had better results with ibuprofen. For my c/s I took tylenol and aleve. Maybe you need to try something different.

  • I had my 2nd csection almost 3 weeks ago and I was prescribed Vicodin and ibuprofen. For me, the prescribed ibuprofen did more for the pain than the Vicodin. My first csection, my doc only prescribed hydrocodine and I was in alot of pain for quite some time. This time around, I was taking the Vicodin every 4 hours and the ibuprofen every 8 hours for the first week. The second week, I was only taking the ibuprofen once a day. Now I am not taking any medication. My doc also told me if I ran outof the prescribed ibuprofen, I could take over the counter ibuprofen. I'm not sure how many mg the prescribed or the counter ibuprofen is.  Just ask your doc and he/she should be able to tell you how many mg you can safely take in one day. Or you might see if he/she will prescribe you ibuprofen.

Percocet was the only thing that helped me. If you need 2, take 2. Taking one and then waiting isn't going to help much of you're still in pain. You need to stay ahead of the pain. Hopefully you'll feel better soon. Pain sucks.

Same for me. Vicodin was worthless IMO. The hospital had actually alternated giving me Vicodin, perc and something else. I guess they thought i responded better to the Vicodin. I ended up not taking it after a day or so and just stuck with the ibuprofen.
