I'm planning a natural, 1st time birth at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. I'm happy with my OBs at Generations in Birmingham, and was encouraged by the doctor when I brought up natural childbirth. I've had many friends deliver at Beaumont, but none of them even considered a med-free birth, which changes the experience and what's involved. When I ask how they liked Beaumont, they tell me about their epidural or c-section experience and if they liked the food. Not so helpful to me. I'm having some anxiety about childbirth now - not of the birth itself or even of the pain, but of the pressure to have Pitocin or an epidural, being told I can't eat/drink during labor, not having a staff prepared to help me through things naturally for as long as it takes...
I desperately need to talk to other women who've had a natural birth and at Beaumont so I can feel less worried. Are there any out there?? If so, did you feel supported by the hospital staff? Were you given options for laboring positions? What kind of preparation/classes did you do beforehand? Did you have a midwife/doula or was it just your significant other? Please share your experience with me.
Re: Natural birth @ Royal Oak Beaumont?
I sent you a PM.
Side note- not sure how true it is but my cousin's wife recently delivered at Troy Beaumont. Her first LO was delivered in RO. She said that recently RO has started a new thing where they no long do foot prints. So IF this is true, you may want to bring a ink pad with you to the hospital if that's important to you.
I know it isn't helpful to what you were asking... but figured i'd mention it.
I don't post here very often and I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for but I wanted to share what I know about RO Beaumont. Of the 3 women I know who have given birth there, all 3 ended up with c-sections. I am in the Ann Arbor area so never researched that hospital but I have a friend who did and she ended up delivering at the Alternative Birthing Center because she was concerned with the high c-section rate at Beaumont. Again, I didn't research this myself but I just wanted to share what I had heard.
GL with your birth!

That is true. I had my son last October and they didn't do any footprints.
I had a Beaumont OB for the first 5 months of my pregnancy when it was brought to my attention that I would not be able to have a water birth there. I could labor in the tub they have, but not give birth in one. Also he mentioned that he reccomends epidurals and would induce if I wanted anywhere after 38 weeks. That scared me, so I did some research.
I found that my insurance covered MW but would not cover home birth or birthing center. So I did more research and found my MW who is through hutzel hospital where I will deliver. So happy I made the switch. My MW and her staff totally support my choice to go natural, and have reassured me so much by answering any of my questions, never making me feel like I'm apart of a baby factory. Plus I get to deliver in a birthing tub! Hutzel is the only hospital in Michigan that does!
My MW also doesn't do episiotomies, nor induces unless medically necessary. She has an extremely low rate of mothers that need a c-section. I'm not totally unafraid of what's to come, but I am comfortable that I made the best choice for me. Beaumont is still a great hospital so regardless you'll be in good hands. (I had to go there once for an emergency situation and the resident that night, Dr. Kennedy was so kind, and thorough. She really put me at ease). Good Luck with your birth.
