Weight loss plan for after baby?

I was just wondering what everyones weight loss plans were for after they have the baby.

I lost about 48 lbs last year through exercise and eating right and I feel impatient lately to get back into my old habits. I was lifting weights and eating high protein/low carb and counting calories. I miss feeling strong, and seeing the scale say over 200 lbs is a little hard for me.

I think I'd really like to try p90x, since it can be done at home and would be easy as I'd be at home with the baby during the day.

I plan on breastfeeding but I'm not relying on breastfeeding alone to drop all my weight for me. I'm just worried about overdoing the diet/exercise and causing my supply to tank like I've heard it happening with others.

What about you guys?

Re: Weight loss plan for after baby?

  • I am planning on just relying on bf'ing and pumping. It took me about 7 months w/dd but I lost over 50lbs from just ep'ing.
  • Loading the player...
  • I plan on BF and encorporating some HerbaLife supplements into my daily food intake. I also hope to return to my usual 3-4 times per week gym routine which includes Spin and Zumba classes.  Here's to hoping and wishing!

  • I'm pretty sure I"m going to lose all the weight I gained during this pregnancy right when I have the baby but I'm ready to tone back up again since I had placenta previa most of this pregnancy I wasn't able to work out so I'm feeling a little on the flabby side.

I plan on BF'ing and pumping, kicking the junk out of my diet now that my insane KFC cravings will probably go away (hopefully) and just staying active. I read that if you wear your baby while you do stuff around the house you can burn an additional 500 calories a day and I'm planning on doing that too. :)

  • Being able to work out and do HIIT training is what I want to do really badly, but I obviouslly can't do that while pregnant.

I just want to get ripped so badly, haha. I love the look of a strong beautiful woman with definition.

EDIT: I just want to add, for me eating right and exercise became a way of life. If it wasn't a lifestyle change I wouldn't have gone from 194 lbs down to 146 last year. I regret that I got up to 164 before getting pregnant due to the stress of our wedding and moving away from home. I just want to get back into my old lifestyle so badly.

  • I'm going to use myfitnesspal.com again.  I lost 20 pounds before getting pregnant by using the site and the android app.  I'll go back to running intervals of cardio, weight lifting, and work my way up to running distances.  I want to run another half marathon in early 2013.
  • Pilates and eating right.

I gained a ton with my son and I just did it again with this little one. I'm excited about losing the weight!

  • My midwife says I'll probably be one of the lucky ones who goes home weighing pre-pregnancy weight or less, but I'm not counting on that. Even if I weigh less, I know my body isn't going to be what it was tone-wise, so I will definitely be doing lots of walking and get back into running (it hurt too much and I had to stop) after I'm cleared to do so, and I'm planning on exclusively breastfeeding as well. As OP mentioned, I don't want to overdo it and cause my supply to be affected!

  • Breastfeeding, hopefully, and lots of cardio and strength training. We've got small gym two blocks from our house in one direction and a fitness studio with spinning, yoga and TRX (the suspension-based exercises) in the other, so we're looking into memberships and how to divide our time (my husband has never had trouble with his weight, other than trying to gain it, and he'd like to build up some more muscle).

I also got my Bellefit girdles yesterday - come back, abs!

  • I am planning on running a half marathon in April so I will start training for that and most likely incorporate GSP Rushfit back into my routine. I get the morning feedings and plan to workout after I put baby back to bed at 5am lol and husband will workout after work and then he will do bathtime and bedtime. At least that is the plan as of now.

If you haven't done P90X before, the workouts are very long, I don't think I want to commit to that with a baby (over an hour most days). If you learn the moves, then you can put it on mute and fast forward through all of Tony's annoying talking lol. My husband completed P90X and loves it and he is planning on getting P90X 2 that is coming out. I like GSP Rushfit because they are 40-45 min workouts, they go by quick and I am done for the day.

Once our baby is 6 months and can start going to childcare at the gym then I will head back to classes there.

  • In addition to breastfeeding, I plan to eat healthy and exercise. I have gained 24lbs and I am hopeful that it will come off easily, but I'm not going to pressure myself to drop the weight in a specific amount of time. I figure it will come off when it comes off, and I'm pretty okay with that.

  • I lost 56 ish pounds prior to pregnancy with Weight Watchers.  So I am going to join back up after baby and I plan on BF too.

  • I have only gained 6 lbs with this pg, my Dr thinks i'll go home weighing my pre-preg weight.  But I plan on BF and starting to work out because I would like to tone up.

  • By the time baby arrives I will have gained approx 30 lbs.

My plan is to rely on healthy eating (no changes there) and exclusive breastfeeding until the ice melts outside. Then little one and I will get getting out for long walks (using either the sling or an ergo)

...I am also counting on the 12 or so pounds down after childbirth

I know they are fairly long, I'm hoping I can sneak it in during nap time. I might look into GSP Rushfit though, that's another idea!

I'm also thinking we should do a weight loss group for our December Moms forum. I'm a member of another weight loss forum and it really helped keep me motivated last year.

I had gotten down to 145 several years ago (thank you WW), then eventually got up to 168 before BFP.  At my last dr's appointment I was 213!  Aaaahhhh!!!  Try not to feel bad...hard I know.

I'm going to BF for as long as I can (pumping once I go back to work) and then do bootcamp classes once I feel up for it.  I'm just going to try and eat healthy, but eat when I'm hungry.  I'm not going to restrict calories or any food item, just in moderation.  Surprisingly, bad food no longer sounds good at all since having Brynn (but it's only been all of 3 days mind you)...hopefully that sticks around.  And then if around 6-9 months if I still have a "lot" of weight to lose, I'll probably do the WW for nursing mothers plan.

  • Nursing, housework, walking our dogs, and dancing with her. My metabolism has always been high. I was able to fit into all but my tightest jeans after 4 weeks with my son and I'm not nearly as big this time, so I'm sure it will be even quicker. If I keep some of the post baby weight on, that's ok too, I'm not overly concerned about it :)

  • I know how you feel. I had a hard time conceiving and worked my @ss off to get in better shape (thinking that might be the issue). I've been really trying to watch my weight during this pregnancy and stuff myself with yucky stuff (like veggies). I HATE seeing that scale gain larger numbers.

Personally I don't know if I'd go the p90x route. It's a REALLY tough workout. I've been told by several people that it's something you have to work your way up to (aka you have to be in good shape to use this and get in excellent shape). When I looked into it it seemed like something that just snowballed too (like buy the DVDs then buy several pieces of equipment to do all the work outs-chin up bar, resistant bands, etc).

This all being said I really like the Beachbody company that makes it. I have a few of their DVD sets and like them. Turbo Jam and Shaun T are both great.

I don't know that it helps much but I really love the Wii Fit too. I think it keeps me more motivated to start a workout than anything else. I typically start there and then and go to either one of the workout DVDs or a run on the treadmill. I also have an elliptical but I get worn out so fast there I feel defeated :S.

All and all I'm just trying to think positive about all of it. Like you, I'm not expecting breastfeeding to be the weight loss cure but I'm hoping to be surprised by that and time. And keeping up the better diet should count for something too!!

  • My plan is to incorporate better eating habits with the 30-Day Shred and walking.  I want to focus on my whole body and not just on losing weight, but just getting in better shape overall.  I'm also planning on BFing so hopefully that will help

  • I'm planning to go back to the low carb/high protein diet I was on pre-pregnancy and to resume lifting weights 3x/week.  I have all the equipment I need at home so hopefully I can keep a decent workout schedule with baby around.

I've used this before too, and it was amazing for me. I have a problem with being too obsessed with my weight and it made me make sure I was eating the right amount, not too much, not too little and it is a great community.

I'll have to grab your screen name for the site iluvmylab, when it comes time :)

  • Eating healthy, yoga, pilates, running/walking. If BF works out this time around, that will help as well.

I lost it all with #1 pretty easily, but I never worked on toning up like I wanted to. This is our last kiddo, and we have a spring 5k penciled in (running with the kids) so DH and I are planning on some more structred runs and fitness plan.

  • I feel the same way about wanting to exercise more and eat better after baby is born.  I'm also over 200 pounds right now (started at 175 and am 5'9" - doctor has said nothing), but I'm anxious as well to get back in shape.

I think I'll start with good ole diet and exercise.  I look forward to getting back to some weights and running.  I will be BFing as well, but I know I can't rely on that alone (although it has worked amazingly for a friend of mine who has always struggled with her weight and being happy with it).  If trying diet and exercise doesn't work so well for me, then I'll look into joining some kind of workout program and/or weight watchers kind of program.

  • Lucky for me DH has already offered mommy time, so treadmill here I come! I will also use my fitness pal app and it's awesome! You can now barcode scan products.

  • I'd go back to the routine you were doing because simply, you know it works for you and in all seriousness, it's going to be better for you over the long term!  I wouldn't waste my money on the P90X because when you break it down if you're already into doing weights you're doing what they tell you to do anyway and this way you don't waste the money on it..

Heading back to the gym is basically what I'm planning to do also (I've been in severe withdrawl the past few weeks), go back to the gym for my regularly scheduled 5x/wk for 2hrs/night lifting/cardio routine (MWF lift, T/Th hike it on the treadmill)...  Start with getting the supporters built back up then get the strength back to where it was pre-preg and start breaking some PR's and AR's again...

  • I was a fitness freak before I was pregnant. I plan on getting back to moderate exercize right away and working up to higher intensity. I have missed it terribly. I was actually a top age-group triathlete and distance runner. I have a stationary bike that I plan to ride a bunch. As soon as LO turns old enough, I will be out with my jogging stroller or bike trailer. I also know how to eat for weight loss--lots of beans and rice and not much sugar. It works like a charm for me.

I can't wait to start losing weight. It actually excites me quite a bit!

  • I plan on breastfeeding again so I know that no matter how hard I workout or diet I will be 10lbs over my ideal weight until I wean. I am one of the unfortunate people that holds onto extra weight during breastfeeding. Last time I held onto the last 10lbs for almost a year. When I weaned I lost them in 3 days! So I am not expecting to fit in my skinny jeans for a long time. I am still in pretty good shape. If all goes as planned, I will run a half marathon in Feb (I am still running at 20-25 miles a week now) and a full marathon in June. I also bought a Groupon for Crossfit and they have lots of 5am classes! I have a couple friends that do it and they look insane.

I also see that there has been some talk of P90x. I did a few rounds of this after I had my first baby. It didn't help me lose weight, but I was ripped! I would certainly not jump into it right after pregnancy. A lot of times you can find people selling it on craigslist if you don't want to spend the money.

  • I've gained 20 lbs so I am hoping to lose at least that--but I won't be upset if it takes awhile. It did take 9 months to put the weight on. I feel like a lot of women set themselves up for disappointment by thinking the baby weight will just come off overnight.

In addition to breastfeeding, I'll be running again 4-6 times per week.

  • I'm actually less worried about losing the weight and more worried about tone. Yes, it would be fabulous to get back down to my pre-pregnancy weight, but as long as I am fit I will be happy!

My plan is to eat well and get back into my yoga as soon as I am cleared to. Pre-natal yoga was just not doing it for me, so I stopped doing any of it. I'm also hoping to get back in to swimming as soon as I am able to. Between the two I've always kept myself well toned. The hardest part will be finding the time to get to the pool. If I have to resort to DVD yoga then so be it, but I can't stick a lap pool in my living room Stick out tongue

  • Breastfeeding/pumping, walking, housework, when it is comfortable to sit I will start riding the exercise bike again.  I have a really good metabolism so we will see if I still do after LO is here.  Giving up all the sweets i've come to love the last 3 months, should be easy since I've never really liked sweets until being pregnant.

  • I'm planning on doing what I've been doing this entire pregnancy.... running three times a week, taking gym classes, lifting weights. I'll start training again for half marathons as soon as I'm cleared to exercise.

  • I found that even light exercise did wonders for my mood and has helped me take off some of the extra weight! Each day, after DH gets home from work, I go for a couple mile walk. If it's warm enough I take DS...but it has been chillier here. Because DS was so premature, the doctors told us to not take him in public so my walks each day are so refreshing.

I've also found that I naturally started to eat better. Now that I am sleep deprived, eating unhealthy foods makes my body feel even worse.

I am 2 lbs off of pre-pregnancy weight but a size larger than any of my clothes. (Part of that weight loss was the "stress diet" of having DS in the hospital for 11 days...not a healthy way to lose weight, but I was just too stressed to eat some days). A lot of the rest will just be toning up my body. I plan to do the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred and to start P90x again once I get the all clear from the doctor! I also want to start jogging with DS once spring arrives!

Looking at this, we have very similar stats. I started at 180 and am 5'9 and am now up over 200 (although further over 200 thank I wanted, I am about 220 now) and am concerned about getting it off afterwards. I plan on EBF if I can, and will try do get on a healthy eating regimen, possibly using WW for BF women. I hope to start to use some workout DVDs (I already have Turbo Jam and am thinking about getting the 30 day shred) plus getting into running since my parents have a treadmill. My goal is to run a 5K in the spring (probably May) and i have never run in an organized anything before, so that is a new challenge for me. I also hope to wear baby a lot moving around the house for both bonding time and the bonus calorie burn!

  • I'm really hoping BF'ing/Pumping will do the trick for me. I don't plan to go all the way back to my pre-pregnancy size as I'd like to keep some meat on my bones but lose the belly. So if BF doesnt do it all the way for me maybe some crunches will :)
