1st Trimester

Hydration

I am really struggling with this.  I have a giant mug that I keep beside me all day and night, and I've been going through about 3 a day.  I've never been good at drinking enough, as having a stomach full of liquid makes me nauseous.  I can down juice much more easily for some reason, but worry about all the sugar from drinking a bottle of juice a day.

My recent symptoms of this are some really unattractive chapped lips...really, like my whole mouth...and I'm sick of them stinging all day.  Maybe I'll try to have soup for a meal a day.  Been hitting the spicy food to force thirst.  Other suggestions for tricking yourself into drinking a lot?

Re: Hydration

  • How about flavored water or Crystal Light?  I'm trying to drink a gallon of water and day and I'm failing miserably.

  • I cannot drink very much during the day becasue I am a teacher. Drink what you can and don't stress too much...
  • I HATE water. I seriously drink what adds up to an entire bottle of water every 6 months. Now that I'm pregnant, I'm definitely feeling the dehydration though. I'm trying to mix crystal light into my water to help me choke down at least 1 glass a day. Other than that, I'm drinking a lot of juice, lemonade, milk, and caffeine free pop (mmm, Vernors).

Be careful with what soups you choose, most are obscenely high in salt. Salt will help you retain fluids but too much salt is all kinds of bad.

Duh.  I totally hadn't thought of that.  I don't know what it is about water; the first glass or so is fine, but then it just starts to taste revolting and I can't do it anymore.  I'm concerned that I'm not even hitting the half-gallon suggestion that I read somewhere.  Embarrassed  But at least my body is making me ugly so that I can't ignore the issue.

  • Hi... I use MIO. It is a flavor for water. So good. I do 2 squirts in my water bottles. I love the peach tea flavor, and berry pomegranate flavors. I hope this helps.. It's so good... It come in a little squeeze bottle... :)

This. I only eat the Healthy Choice "reduced sodium" kind. If its not tasty enough, just add some faux salt seasoning!

Here's what I do: I think of the day that I was sent to L&D at 28 weeks becuase my blood pressure was through the roof and there was protein in my urine. Turns out I was dehydrated.  Since then, I just do it.

But try flavoring  the water with lemon, lime, strawberries, whatever you like.  My mom bought me a water pitcher at bed bath and beyond that has a little insert through the middle, and you fill it with watever fruit you want, and the fill the pitcher with water.  It flavors the water naturally and was easy to get down the required amount.  My favorite was strawberry and lemon.  I will try to find it and post a link.

That's the kind of thing that I'm terrified of causing.  Thank you for sharing.  Checking out this pitcher idea...

  • Have you tried cutting your juice with water?  I drink water with juice in about a 90% to 10% ratio.  Pomegranate, grape, cranberry, and orange all work well.  Or you can add a splash of lime in with the cranberry, etc. etc.  Similar to the fruit pitcher idea, you can also add mint leaves or slices of ginger to water.

  • Have you tried watering down your juice?  Mixing it 50/50 with water?  Then you aren't getting as much sugar!

  • I would suggest Propel or Gatorade - g2 has less calories than the regular stuff.  Also, eating fruits with high water content like melon or citrus fruit can help.

Thanks so much for posting this. I just ordered a similar pitcher and I can't wait for it to get here!  :)

  • I struggle with this too. Even when I feel I've drank enough during the day, I feel like I'm sooo thirsty and I wake up in the middle of the night feeling majorly de-hydrated. Whoever posted the link about the pitcher -- kudos. Hope you start to do better with the fluid issue!

  • I am not a huge fan of water so I add a small amount of the Country Time lemonade mix in with my water.  Helps me a ton! I'm going to look into that pitcher as well thanks for posting!
