We are leaving Thursday for a 21 hour car trip and I'm trying to get together books for DS to read. Looking for recommendations!
He has already read:
ALL Magic TreeHouse, Junie B., Encyclopedia Brown, Jigsaw Jones, Time Warp Trio, plus a lot of Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and most of the Boxcar Children. He is nearly done with the Geronimo Stilton/Thea Stilton books. (We do not care for the Captain Underpants type books.) He is an avid reader, if that's not obvious lol.
He is 7 but reads on at least a 4th grade level? We just finished Johnny Tremain, if that's any indication. Basically, just looking for recs for good books/lit for a boy that loves to read but that is also appropriate (he's in 2nd grade). Thanks!
Re: Book recs for 7 yo that loves to read?
My son is 7 and is into the same type of stuff as your son. My son's recent reads include:
The BFG, by Roald Dahl
The Twits, by Roald Dahl
Toys Go Out, by Emily Jenkins
the How To Train Your Dragon series, by Cressida Cowell
Harry Potter, books 1-3
He also likes books about Star Wars (the DK reader series has a bunch of different Star Wars stuff.)
He likes myths, legends, and fairy tales. The woman who did the Magic Tree House series also wrote a kids' version of The Odyssey which my son LOVED. I also got him a really cool graphic novel about Zeus.
He also reads Pokemon manga books and Warrior Cats manga books.
Anything by Ron Roy is great - A-Z mysteries, Capital Mysteries, The Secrets of Droon Series, and Dragon Slayer Academy books are also good.
Edit to add: The Berenstain Bear Boy Scout Series and Andrew Lost series are good too.
(My DS also loves to read!)
The Story of Jumping Mouse by John Steptoe
Great book for discussion. Read the book together in the car predict what will happen next, revise predictions, talk about the mental images you see as you read the story etc.
My students LOVED this book!
