What would be the best type of frosting for these cupcakes?

Ok so I am in charge of making a dessert for Thanksgiving dinner. I decided to make chocolate cupcakes with a filling. Some will have a chocolate filling some will have a caramel filling and some will have a peanut butter cup filling. What type of frosting would you ladies use for them?

I would like to make one batch of frosting for all three but I am not sure what would work well with caramel, choclate and peanut butter cups. I thought of using chocolate but I'm not sure if it would be to much chocolate since the cupcakes are going to be chocolate as well.

Suggestions?

  • What about butter cream?  Or French vanilla?

... although I am not opposed to an extra dose of chocolate!

  • I'd do a French vanilla or a cream cheese frosting, but I like "white" frostings with chocolate cake.

  • For me I would probably do a mixture. I have a pretty kick butt vanilla buttercream recipe I would do for one, a chocolate butter cream for another, and then marshmallow frosting. All three are easy to make. The chocolate buttercream recipe I have though is pretty bomb. I remember eating it plain with a spoon when pregnant.
