  I've made it before and just used a cheese grater to grate the soap.  It was a bit time consuming, but it worked with no problems.

  We use the CD stuff for everything including dh's nasty postal uniforms that he sweats into all summer and everything comes clean. I hate grating soap!

  Cheese grater or I think there are soap chips/flakes you can buy.
