Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Who feeds cereal to a 6 WEEK old?

There are always posts about MIL or grandma trying to shove food down LO's throat at 6 wks because that's how they used to do it, but who in this day and age actually does it? My fb friend, that's who. She posted a pic "cereal was a hit!" and I was like, isn't her baby a month old? And I look back and yep, he's 6 weeks. And she's feeding him rice cereal and it looks thick too. And he's in the bouncy chair because of course he can't hold his head up. Yep, I'm being judgmental.

Re: Who feeds cereal to a 6 WEEK old?

  • Holy cow!  Why would anyone think that's necessary?  I wanted to put off food as long as possible - it's so messy!  (I'm opposed to really early feeding for more reasons, but - the mess!)

  • Lurking.

My neighbors do it with all their NBs as soon as they get out of the hospital. Their youngest DD was 20lbs at 8wks old because of it. It was really sad, she had a lot of trouble breathing from all the extra weight. They all still believe it makes them sleep better.

I think this is still really popular in certain cultures.

Unlurking.  But 20 lbs at 8 WEEKS?!  How is that even possible!!!  Poor babies.

Sorry, I have a hard time being an 8 week old cold actually weigh that much. *shrug*

My friend gave her son a little rice cereal because he was not gaining weight on breastmilk alone. I agree that is generally too young to start solids, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly.

There was a 16 lb baby born in Texas a couple of months ago.  I think it's totally possible.

  • My co-worker gave her baby cereal at that age and he got super constipated. They ended up giving him juice to clear him up and just continued on with the cereal and juice combo. Totally judging.

For some reason I was reading 8 weeks and thinking 8 days, but either way holy crap. My daughter was 18 lbs at her 4 month check up... but she was over 26 inches long. Indifferent

  • And that's one of the reasons so many kids have food allergies! People are stupid!
  • Lurking also. I have a FB friend who did the same thing but started cereal earlier and then when her DS was about a month, she posted pics of him with chocolate all over his face and then eating banana pudding with whipped cream. A couple of days later she posted a pic of him with an empty container of green beans (pureed) saying "He finished it all!". When someone commented about how he was so young she said "Yeah, I know they say you shouldn't do it, but he likes it!". D'oh.

  • Obviously, this is a different generation--my friend's mom must be about 80 (since my friend is in her 50s), but in her mom's baby book, it says she had her first solid food at 2 WEEKS!

    Craziness!

The same friend is always updating me about the babies across the street from her. Twins who at 6 months weighed 26 pounds *each*. My little guy is 7 months old and is probably about 18 pounds now.

  • My mom wrote in my brother and my baby books that we were eating cereal at around 2 months.  It was normal back then.  I can't imagine thinking it's necessary in this day and age.  Do these people even bring their babies to the pedi?

  • my cousin did this.  also had lo in an exersaucer at the same time (~2 months)  and she's college-educated, and not an idiot in any other area of life.

  • my mil gets on my case about feeding solids to dd (she's only had rice and oatmeal cereal so far) because she fed dh cereal, applesauce and pears at 2.5 months.  she believes i'm starving dd...and i hear it daily.

i think it's selfish and wrong for people to give babies solids at an early age only for them to sleep better.

  • Yeah, I saw that in my baby book that my mom was supposed to be giving me veal or something at that age.  I can't even imagine the logistics of that.
