Infertility

Hydrosalpinx Experiences

Hello. My hubby and I have been TTC for 19 months. This summer we were diagnosed with hydrosalpinx and low sperm count/motility. My doctor was still very optimistic that IUI would work for us. So we have been attempting to do an IUI for 4 months now, but my body seems to work against me and 3/4 months I was ovulating on the blocked side. (One of the months we didn't scan because my doctor was out of town).

I haven't heard many success stories for those with hydrosalpinx that doesn't involve IVF. I am hoping someone out there can give me a shimmer of hope.

We have been very frustrated, sad, mad, discouraged lately and need to hear other peoples experiences. Thank you!

Re: Hydrosalpinx Experiences

  • I am by no means an expert on hydrosalpinx, but from what I have read, most Dr's recommend removal of the affected tube because I can harbor fluid that is toxic to developing embryos. Maybe you should seek a second opinion? If you have one good tube and ovary, though, it is reasonable to try IUI.

  • I was diagnosed with a hydrosalpinx after my HSG, but after a big disaster of an IUI with cysts and being sick for months, it turned out it was actually a pyosalpinx ... pus filled, from infection.  I am not trying to scare you, and I am sure your situation is different, but I am surprised they are carrying on with the IUIs without removing the tube - or trying to clear and open it?

  • I have a hydrosalpinx too, but don't have a success story yet.  We're meeting with the RE in December to see what his plan is for the tube.  We may either clip it or remove it is my guess.

You might want to try cross-posting this on PAIF and/or SAIF too, because that's where you'll find the success stories.  (I'll definitely be following the responses!)

    Good luck to you!

  • I had both tubes removed due to bilateral hydrosalpinx. I just completed my first IVF and am in the 2ww.
    Twin boys due 7/25/12
  • My doctor said the surgery was risky and that it could result in more damage than good. She said it could damage the other tube, or cause a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy. She never mentioned it being dangerous to a baby. Now I'm a little nervous.Huh?

I guess I'll have to add that to my list of more questions to ask.

    Thanks!

  • I have a hydrosalpinx, and I had to have the tube cut before my RE would proceed with any treatment. My RE said I should have the surgery even if we weren't going to do any treatments and just going to continue trying on our own because the fluid is potentially toxic to an embryo. Definatly ask your Dr. about this.
