Breastfeeding

Just went back to work ... (pumping question) ...

So I just went back to work on Monday and I've been pumping three times a day (about when she would eat).  My AM pumps are typically of greater volume that the rest of my pumping sessions, but .... On Friday the AM pump I got 9 oz, the lunchtime pump I got 2.5 oz, and then the PM pump I got 4.5 oz.  Is it normal to get that much of a discrepancy in pumping sessions?  (If it matters I have the medela freestyle and I do hand compressions on the breast as well.)

  • It can be a lot of different things...sometimes I get 16oz, sometimes I get 4oz.  Stress, hydration, calorie intake, and timing also play a part.  I would just continue your pumping sessions, and make sure you stay fed and hydrated.  If that doesn't work, you might want to check and see if you feel a clog...I know that that sometimes accounts for a temporary drop in output.  Try using a diaper that LO has outgrown, fill it with hot/warm water and apply it to your breast before you pump for a few minutes (or even while you are pumping). The warm wet compress will help loosen any clogs.

  • I have found that my early afternoon pumps are generally less than the others. I usuallly on average pump 7-11oz at a time, and early afternoon pumps are on the low range of my norm. Like pp said, I think that your fluid and caloric intake makes a difference, Plus your prolactin horomone is higher in the morning, so it is normal to have more at this time of day.

  • Totally normal. I also pump 3 times a day and range from 10-4oz a session.
