Lurker with a running PP ?

I lurk often and see a lot of running posts. I ran my entire pregnancy including the day before I went into labor. I had an easy labor but had a 2nd degree tear. I'm 1 week PP and feeling good, have been walking since 2 days PP and really want to try to run. If you're an avid runner, when did you start back and do you have any advice? TIA!

  • Exactly what PP said...you have a wound that isn't all healed up yet. You need to rest even though you feel great. Give it a couple of weeks before you decide to start going for a walk first then a run.
  • My OB recommended I wait in b/w 4-6 w, so I waited 5. Even though I had an easy delivery and quick recovery, your joints and ligaments are still loose and overly flexible. I have heard of lots of people being fine before then, but I have heard a few stories of people doing too much too soon that scare me straight. I won't have time for PT with three kids ;)
IME, your fitness does come back quicker than you think. A few weeks off is nothing in the long scheme of things. Good luck!

  • 5 weeks, but I had a c-section.  Most of my avid runner friends ran about 3 weeks pp without any problems.

  • I ran my entire pregnancy, including the day I was induced.  I started back running at 3 weeks.

My doctor said that because I had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery and a high level of fitness beforehand there was no reason I couldn't start back into running when I felt up to it.

I did take it easy at first - I only did 2 miles and a very moderate pace the first run out (which was still a heckofalot faster than my pregnancy pace.)  When my doctor asked how it felt I laughed and told her it was great, just not long enough!  I also cut back my running to every other day the first 2 weeks back.

Thanks! This is what my OB said too, thanks for your input!

  • I ran through my whole pregnancy too.  I started back at 3 weeks.  Just listen to your body.  My hips have been a bit sore after runs.  This is my reminder that I am still healing.  Start easy and slowly move back.  It feels great to be back out running!

  • Can't wait to start running again! I made the choice to not run while being prego and I really miss it! It's great to hear I should be able to get back out there within a few weeks (as long as all goes right with the delivery).

6 weeks. You do realize there is an open wound inside your body, right? It's not all about how good you feel.

Where is this open wound you speak of?

Where your placenta detached from the inside of your uterus.  Think of it like a giant scab inside of you with really good blood flow to it.  If you noticed an increase in pain or bleeding after exercise it's probably from this area and a sign you are doing to much to soon.

Yeah, but the site where the placenta detaches closes almost immediately.  I saw this and asked my brother, who is an OB/GYN, and I was like -- WTF, I've never, ever heard that before, and he was like, yeah, that's not correct.  So I was just wondering if I was missing some other gaping wound I should be asking him about . . . .

  • When I had dd i asked the same questions and got the same variety of answers. I started running again at 3 weeks and ran a 1/2 marathon at 7 weeks. I felt great and ran it slow, but rant the whole way. Some people were very judgemental but I ran through my whole pregnancy as well and my doctor said it was ok. Listen to your doctor. Listen to your body. You stayed active during your whole pregnancy and obviously know your body. (btw I had a natural birth and an episiomoty. i didn't have any problems with that or the stitches).

  • I had an easy pregnancy, labor and delivery with my first (fingers crossed for the same this time around).  My OB signed off on my jogging at 2 weeks post delivery. I jogged for about 15 minutes slowly and it felt fine.  I would say to ask your OB and listen to your body.  Plenty of people need more time than that, but it depends on the person.
