Trouble TTC

Sacrifices I don't want to make...

DH has pointed something out to me this morning, as I lamented that I couldn't work out today.  I'm willing to do all sorts of crazy things, including taking meds and getting poked and prodded with needles, in order to get pregnant.  But I really hate having to not work out for several days around implantation for it.

What's that one thing you really hate having to give up?

Re: Sacrifices I don't want to make...

  • Why aren't you allowed to work out? My doctor said working out is fine as long as I am not doing anything that is bouncing around or lifting heavy weights. But cardio on the elliptical or bike is fine along with light weights.

I'd think if you were out spinning or hiking, working out would be fine.  I'm sorry :(

  • For me, the sacrifice I don't want to make is pumping my body full of hormones.  But that's also not a choice I get to make if I want a baby...  so there's not really a way around it.

  • I've always worked out pretty hard, and a couple of months ago I read a study that said women who worked out vigorously between dpo 6-9 had about 1/2 the chance of being pregnant.  I think I could just do a light workout and be fine, but DH would rather I not take the chance this time.  Not worth the risk, in his opinion.

  • We are fortunate enough to have insurance that covers everything so when I think of the things I have to sacrifice, like my veins and shooting my body chock full of hormones, it seems like nothing compared to what the girls who are OOP have to sacrifice.

I guess the worst thing is that our romantic life has been seriously affected.  IF treatments have sucked the life out of my libido.

  • To a degree I feel like I am sacrifing financial security. I really want to pay off tons of our debt but if we need to get further treatment I want to save for that. And I hate having to chose one or the other. Either get IF treatment, or pay off debt and be in a better financial situation to actually have kids :p

I've always worked out pretty hard, and a couple of months ago I read a study that said women who worked out vigorously between dpo 6-9 had about 1/2 the chance of being pregnant.  I think I could just do a light workout and be fine, but DH would rather I not take the chance this time.  Not worth the risk, in his opinion.

Did the study mention what was classified as vigorous? I work out regularly but only use the bike or elliptical for cardio and only use light weights but do more reps. So I am curious if what I do would be considered vigorous. I guess I could always just cut out exercise on 6-9dpo

  • My RE is pretty strict with the exercise limitations around IUI and IVF. During my 3 IUI cycles (all BFNs), I was told no exercise during the 2ww, besides walking, bike riding or yoga. Now, as I am starting my first IVF with ICSI cycle, I was told no exercise but walking. I feel like a lump, but I've come this far, that I don't want to risk the exercise having a negative impact on my outcome.

After each of my IUIs, I've ben told to do nothing that will get my heart rate over 120.  Basically, I can walk or do yoga/pilates.  On the elliptical my HR gets over 120 really quickly.  So I stick with walking and pilates.  It is so lame, I miss running and the gym so badly.

ETA: My doctor also mentioned that things like weight lifting can redirect your blood flow to those muscles, while you would ideally prefer as much of your blood flow as possible to hang out in your uterus.

  • No, they unfortunately didn't define vigorous; that's my dilemma, too.  I feel like I should be able to at least get on a stationary bike.

The only thing they had the women do was to put their workout on a scale of 1-3, 3 being their most vigorous; and women who were at a 3 during dpo 6-9 had lower pregnancy rates.

My heart rate usually doesn't get past 130 even when I try so I guess if I just slow down a little I should be fine. I also heard about weight lifting drawing blood away from reproductive organs which is why I lift light weights where I can do up to 15 reps easily. I think it's when you use really heavy weights that are hard to lift that makes weight lifting bad. I also do yoga but heard that some of the twisting poses are bad so I try to modify a little.
