Homemade Butt Paste

So I am new to the diaper rash problem.  DD#1 never had it and now DD#2 has a horrible rash, again.  I am doing as much diaper-free time as possible.  Anybody use any homemade diaper rash creams?  I was looking at a recipe that called for equal parts of Desitin (original) + Lotrimin, adding Mylanta to desired consistency.

Not sure if there is yeast present or not but it looks horrible with one little spot that is weaping a bit......and she is terribly uncomfortable during diaper changes.

Any suggestions from more experienced diaper rash momma's welcome!

Re: Homemade Butt Paste

  • I've never tried to mix my own concoction, but I highly recommend "Triple Paste."  They have it at Target and some drug stores.  It works like a charm, even when DD had a horrible rash from antibiotics.  Hope that helps!

  • I second triple paste, but the weeping sore concerns me.  If the triple paste does not work,  I suggest going to see your pedi, who can give you something stronger.

  • The best (ever) for us had been good ol' cornstarch. We just sprinkle a bit here and there. My Mom used it with all five of her kids and told me. When I first heard about it I just laughed. Guess what they sell baby powder with cornstarch, so guess she was right. I know some MDs say no powder, but they are wrong. Good luck.

  • Good old zinc oxide - which is what Desitin is - works fine, tons of ingredients doesn`t necessarily make it better. My worry is, at lo`s age, what is making #2 so acidic to give a rash like that. Is in a yeast infection, or some other bug that is doing it, or is it the kind of diaper, or what lo is eating (or maybe what you're eating)? If you get to what is causing the diaper rash, it does make it easier to make it go away. If it's fungal, or something else, you'll need more than otc stuff.
  • Desitin didn't seem to work well for my son and he would cry and say it burns when I applied it for him as a toddler...  I recommend "Bourdoux's Butt Paste" which can be found at Target and CVS in the baby section.  That stuff doesn't burn and seemed to take care of the problem in one application...
  • Do not use cornstarch if there is a chance it is a yeast rash.   Cornstarch would just be food for the yeast and it will turn into a huge mess.  (SIL learned that lesson)
