Ladies, we have been struggling with a boy's name. we are looking for a T name ( to honor my deceased grandma) and there is nothing we like ( Theodore, Timothy, etc). We came across name Tomer. It is hebrew, which is perfect for us ( we are jewish). What do you think of this name? We can call him Tommy when he is little, and Tomer when he grows up. I am afraid to give a child a too weird name, do not want him to be mocked.
Opinions, please!
Re: Tomer
How do you pronounce it? Toe-mer? or Tah-mer?
If so, it sounds like some verbs in Spanish (Tomar, Comer), so if you live in an area with a lot of Spanish-speakers it might be something to consider. But, I do like Tommy
GL!
It sounds like this name has good meaning for you, but unfortunately I really don't like how it looks. It reminds me of tumor and gomer (the latter of which may not be common parlance, but is still a negative association for me).
You will probably also encounter some difficulty with pronunciation. If I were to take a stab at it, it would rhyme with Homer, but I'm guessing that may not be right.
I think I like it. I like the NN possibility and I think it has an attractive look about it. I like the meaning it has for you as well.
I would use a more mainstream MN:
Tomer Adam
Tomer John
Tomer Christopher
Tomer Alexander
it is quite Israeli. Ugh.. looks like the baby remains nameless:-(
No offense, but I think it's terrible. It reminds me of tumor.
What about Thomas, Theo, or Thatcher?
I get that it's a legitimate Hebrew name, and I really want to like it, but this is all I can think of too. Sorry.
ladies, no offense taken. i ask for honest opinions and appreciate them.
grandma's name was Tanya ( we are russian jews)
dislike strongly Thatcher and Thomas. Theo is eh.. ok
Tomer is ok. I like Tomer James and even TJ as a nn. Also, Tomer Aaron, Tomer Charles.
Have you considered Trevor? Similar in sound and I kinda like it better. I'm also really digging the name Todd lately.
dislike Trevor.
what would the nickname for Todd be?
looks like tomer the gomer...
don't care for it. If it has some jewish meaning you like then go for it, but for sure not in my liking.
Topher... As in Topherkey?
tobin is ok
If you live in a Jewish area with a lot of Israelis this is a very popular name. I'm more familiar with and partial to the Israeli spelling which is Tamir... but either way, nice choice.
Great name!
Tal is a very nice name, but the issue i see with it is that in US there is no soft "L", so with the way americans would pronounce it, it would sound harsh.
well, i live in NY, so there are a lot of Jews here:-) However, i would not want anything super Israeli or Orthodox. i will think about Tamir. thanks
Tamir is MUCH better then Tomer
None of the Tamir's I know are Orthodox and even though they are Israeli in nationality, they are 100% American. I think it's a lovely name and much better than Tomer.
Yes, it is! I like Tamir. I knew a guy in college named Tal, and that's not bad either.
I'm sure you've looked through lists, but just in case seeing them again helps, some other possibilities are: Tate, Teague, Terrence, Thaddeus, Thurston, Tobias, Titus, Travis, Trey, Tristan, Trent, Troy, Truman, Tucker, Tyler
DH'I also think tumor...
What about Tristan? Thaddeus(nnTad)? Tanner? And my favorite: Travis (my DH's name.)
