daycare- here we go again :-(

OMG, I cannot believe this is happening.  Just got an email from Gavin's daycare director.  We LOVE this school but they can no longer accomodate our part time schedule (He only goes 3 days a week).  As of Jan. 1- he has to go full time.  We can't afford to send 2 kids here full time and the plan has been for us to send Sophie here as soon as they have a spot (probably Feb).  I understand it was a business decision but omg, I'm freaking out right now having to deal with finding ANOTHER daycare again.  The past year at this school has been so amazing- even when it seems like a huge financial burden, we have known that it was the best place for Gavin- he's made such huge improvements in language and we were willing to make the sacrifice.  I have been looking forward to Sophie moving here to simplify our life w/ one daycare drop off.  Now I don't know what to do... daycares up by our house are much more affordable and convenient but we are concerned about making it up here by 6 pm closing time if traffic is bad.  Daycare at my office is only a short term solution- we need some place that will accomodate him for Pre-K next fall.  Please pray for God's intervention... I need a clear sign of what to do next.

Re: daycare- here we go again :-(

  • I thought you were selling and moving closer to work?  Is that still happening or is the housing market just not there yet?  Bc I think that would make your lives so much easier if that option is still on the table.  But if that is not happening (this recession SUCKS) then I think you should for the time being do the work daycare to save your sanity (and wallet) and then look around your house for a dc that is open until 7.  I've noticed around here (Dacula/Lawrenceville) that ever since the HOT lanes were installed there are daycares advertising the 7PM time.  Could you do 7PM and have an "emergency" friend or relative help with pickup on days that traffic just bites the big one?  Also, with a dc close to home you could have stress free sick days bc then you could drop the kids and go home to recuperate.  I miss that being a SAHM.

Your post makes me thankful for the fact that when I was working, I was close to home and daycare and when I had to work overtime, my ILs could do pickup (DH travels often which made the decision to SAH with two kind of a no brainer).  I only had daycare pickup stress a time or two.  It was a real blessing.  As nuthouse as my ILs are, we will probably never move away from them.

The house is off the market for now.  Unless someone drops a pile of cash in our laps to get us out of our mortgage, our president has effectively trapped us here indefinitely.  I will look for daycares open till 7 but I've never seen one.  Cobb wasn't effected by the HOT lanes (yet) so there is not much market for it here.

  • How would an after school nanny/babysitter do for the 3 days a week for Gavin?  If he is in Lottery PreK your cost for that should be minimal and you could put the money toward the Nanny.  You could probably find a couple of high school seniors or college students at KSU that would be able to team up and cover it for $8-10/hr.  Part of their job could be to help Gavin with any homework and start dinner.  Might be worth the money.

Edited to clarify that the plan would be: Work Daycare until PreK then Lottery PreK and babysitters near/at your house.

  • So are they totally getting rid of part time at that school? I'd be freaking out too.

No they aren't... it was weird.  Email me and I'll explain... I don't want to talk about it online.

  • Can you do a spot share and find someone that needs 2 days a week?

This is basically the problem- we have been going T, W, Th, and they haven't had anyone want M and F.  But all along, I've offered to do other days if it would help them fill the roster.  But the email they sent was just saying they could no longer accomodate us part time and he would have to be enrolled full time but we were free to only send him 3 days a week.  Gee thanks Confused  Anyway, I think we've got a solution worked out for now...
