At my last mw visit, she got on to me because of my weight. I'd gained 10 lbs in 5 weeks. Up until that point, I was having fainting issues and was told (by her) that I need to up my calorie and protein intake and that I needed to focus on gaining enough weight and not worry about it being too much. I was really embarrassed and frustrated that I had gained too much because I've never had a weight issue before AND I was doing what she had told me.
That was two weeks ago. I've really been trying to watch what I'm eating (meaning not having dessert, not having "breakfast bars" as a snack but instead choosing healthier options, etc.), I've also been trying to get in more walks or use my workout DVD. I weighed myself today and I've gained almost 4 more lbs. I KNOW that weight gain is normal and that's not my issue. My concern is that I'm gaining too much. I thought I'd heard that it's supposed to be 1/2 lb a week but if that's right I'm quadrupling it!
What say you ladies? Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?
ETA: If you saw my confession about the cupcakes, that's not something I normally do! That's why it was my confession.
Re: WDYT about this? (re. pg weight gain)
have you had your glucose tolerance test yet? it does seem a little high if you've been watching what you're eating and walking, etc. I'd just keep being healthy and bring it up to her about how you're concerned since you're doing all the right things.
I have the test next Thursday. I'm afraid of it because (stupid me), I googled the symptoms of GD and they were excessive thirst and hunger and excessive weight gain.
Of course, I feel like I have all of these but DH says all pregnant women probably have these.
Sorry to say, but your husband is wrong. How much weight have you gained thus far? I have no idea about how much someone carrying just one baby is supposed to gain and I was too busy throwing up to be hungry or thirsty all the time (or gaining weight, didn't gain near as much as my OB wanted me to), but seems to me that being pregnant is *the* time to gain weight, yeah?
I hope you pass your GD test and your OB SsTFU.
I've gained almost 20 lbs so far.
I think the recommended weight is 25-35 for the whole pregnancy.
You're just fine. I hate saying don't listen to your doc, but if you're comfortable with how you've been eating, then I would just keep doing what you're doing.
I have GD and none of those symptoms
I was fluxing 5 pounds at 2 week visits for a while, it's just normal.
I'd tell her you are frustrated that you were told to gain more and you did then you got yelled at for doing it and are doing things right and don't know what you should do.
you are pregnant you can cry
First of all, in my non-medical professional opinion, unless there's a medical problem with you or the baby, I do not think pregnancy is the time to stress about if you're gaining too much weight and it's certainly not the time to deprive yourself. Eat 3 meals, plus 2 snacks-make at least moderately healthy choices but enjoy some dessert if you like it. When I first got pg with DS and asked my (awesome, amazing, fantastic) OB about weight gain, she basically said I'd have to blow up like a whale before she'd say anything to me about it. We never discussed it again
Secondly, do not be afraid to share your frustration. Let them know that they've given you mixed messages and that it's really stressing you out. Ask for clear answers. Don't leave the appointment until you feel satisfied with the plan for the rest of the pregnancy.
I gained 50lbs during pregnancy. My body LOVES to gain weight and it loved weight while I was pregnant. I'm pretty sure I'd gained more than you have by this point and was downing over 2 gallons of water on a slow day and I didn't have GD. As long as you're making good choices, drinking lots of water and trying to exercise when you can then I'm pretty much a believer that you're body will do what it's suppose to do when pregnant. Eat good proteins, vegetables, fruits and as little processed foods as possible.
I know it's really hard right now but don't stress about every single pound.
Uh, I saw you a couple of weeks ago and you are teeny tiny! Don't worry about it until you have too!
Unless you have GD, Do NOT worry about it.
It's 4 lbs. Your body is creating new life, just roll with it. Doctors gotta say something because some women take pregnancy as an excuse to eat everything in sight including fast food 3-4 times a day. That's usually how one gains 100lbs. I'm not knocking women who do, but it's not healthy and many women will never lose it all. .
Your body is doing miraculous things in there. If you're drinking plenty of water and nourishing yourself with healthy foods, both you and the baby will be fine. You don't have to count every pound.
I see the same group of midwives that you do, and I feel like some are more hardcore about the weight gain than others. The last midwife I saw was on my case about it a little bit, too. I would talk to whomever you see at your next appt about it, and get another opinion. I have my glucose test in a few weeks too, and as long as that comes back okay, I'm honestly not worried about it. I appreciate that they are looking out for my total health and well-being; I love that they are interested in me for the long-term, not just while I'm pregnant (I've seen them for well-woman checks for years). I try to remember that when they give me that look when I tell them my weight. Easier said than done sometimes though! As long as you're eating as healty as reasonably possible and excercising when you can, I'd be willing to bet you're fine. I was underweight for a long time, and one of the midwives made me feel a lot better about my body needing the extra weight right now. Hang in there!
Have you signed up for the "new trends" class yet? I can't decide if we're going to do it in Dec. or Jan. Maybe we'll be in the same one!

Thanks everyone. I'm just going to do my best and hope for good results at the test next week. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for being supportive.
abh- We're trying to get in to the December class. Last time I was in, we asked them to put our name down to let us know as soon as they make the schedule so we can sign up. I hope it works out for you guys to take that one, as well!
