having the hardest time

having the hardest time with my 17 month old drinking milk out of a sippy cup..our dr said she needed to be off the bottle completely...mind you she only got a bottle at night with milk. well now everytime we give her milk in a sippy cup she refuses to drink it..bought every type of sippy cup imaginable and even tried putting chocolate in it...still no luck...dr says she will eventually drink it when she wants it..but how long its been almost a week.

please give some advice or suggestions

TIA

Re: having the hardest time

  • Does she drink milk from the sippy during the day? If so, keep at it for the nighttime drink. She'll get there.

Or, you could just let her keep that 1 bottle I wouldn't worry about it.  DH took a bottle till he was 3 and he's a fine, well adjusted productive member of society. IMO if one nighttime bottle makes your life easier, just do it for a little while longer.

I was totally prepared to keep that 1 bottle for a long while but as an experiement I gave DD a sippy of milk before bed a couple of weeks ago, and she did fine with it. So, we said bye bye to the bottles, but only bc DD was ready

  • My pedi wanted my DDs off bottles at 1 yo.  DD#1 had a bottle until around 18 months old, I lied to my pedi about it.  She's fine.  Do whatever works for you, but definitely keep trying.  She WILL get there.

Also, with DD#2 (she takes a sippy no problem) but when I went for her 1 year check up, I had just started and she wasn't taking milk that well.  My pedi said that if she didn't even drink any milk, she would be totally fine b/c of other things in her diet, like cheese, yogurt, etc.

Try not to stress too much about it!

  • I got rid of daytime bottles first, cold turkey & kept a bottle inthe AM and right before bed so that I didn't worry about hydration/calories as much. For a week they threw those sippies on the floor, breakfast lunch & dinner. I just kept handing it back & gave them water too. After a couple weeks they started drinking a little from it. Maybe a month after I got rid of daytime bottles, I stopped the other 2 and just did sippies. didn't faze them as much but they were never super attached to the bedtime bottle or anything.

You have to stick with it however you do it, if you offer sippy & give in & give the bottle, they learn that pretty quickly. GL!

  • If sippy cups aren't working how about focusing on using real cups? An occupational therapist suggested using a shot glass with thicker liquid (watered down yogourt, etc) so they can practice that way.

My best friend is a speech pathologist and told me that sippy cups keep her in business due to the way kids sip, so maybe not learning isn't the worst thing in the world Smile

  • Have you tried a straw cup?  DS seems to like these better than sippys

Ditto on this.  I've also heard a cup with a straw is better for speech development anyways.

  • My doctor recommends straw cups, and even regular cups. We've been experimenting with a few sips of milk from a small plastic cup. So far, so good.
