Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How many kids do you want to have?

If you didn't have to worry about money or your health, how many kids do you think is a good number to have?  DH and I said we'd stop at 2.  We have 2 adorable and so sweet little boys.  But some friends of our just had a baby girl, and I've been making little girl stuff to sell and part of me toys with the idea of maybe trying one last time.  It probably won't ever happen, but I dream about it sometimes, especially now that my little guy is almost one year old!  Then I wake up the next morning telling myself, why mess with our perfect family?  I grew up in a family of 3 kids and I guess I always felt like the 5th wheel and felt left out since I was the only girl.  So I kind of always said I didn't want 3 kids because I didn't want someone to have to be the middle child.  What do you think?  Especially if you want 3, what are your reasons?  I didn't have a great experience being in a family of 3 kids, but that's probably just my weird family.

Re: How many kids do you want to have?

  • Right now, I would like 4.  I have a minimum of 3, ideal of 4, max of 5. DH says his minimum is 2, ideal 3, max 4...so we'll see. I can't put too much weight on any of it since I know what we want may change as we have more, and we also have to do fertility treatments so it's not as easy as we'd like.

  • 3. We both agree on that. I was the baby and only girl with 2 older brothers and I wouldn't change it for anything.

  • We're done at two kids. We just feel like our family is complete now. I have zero desire to have any more and feel like I wouldnt be as good a mom to more than 2- I know my limits!
  • Like the previous poster said, I'd like four, 3 minimum and 5 maximum. We conceived with LO on our first try but I'd like to be done having these kids by 32 (I'm 26 right now). However, DH is still in grad school, so it all depends on when he gets out and how old we are then, that's why I said 3 minimum.
  • When we first starting talking about having kids, we always said 3 or 4. I'm one of 3 girls and H is one of 4 (3 boys & 1 girl). After what we went through to get DD & the fact that she's high needs, we decided that when they take out #2 (not preg yet, but it will be a scheduled c/s), they can tie it up while they're in there. We're 2 & done. I would have loved a big family, but my sanity just couldn't do it.
  • We originally wanted three (both oldest of three), but due to health risks, we feel blessed to have two. I'm having a hysterectomy in the next few years - so yeah, done.

  • We're one and done. If DH were younger, I would maybe consider two, but there's no way DH would go for that.

  • Minimum 3, Ideal 4, Max of 6.I love kids but it will really depend on our financial situation.

  • Probably 4. No more than 5, and no less than 3.

I came from a family with 3 children, and being the youngest of the three I always felt like it was too lonely wishing our family was larger. My brother in law has 5 kids and I see how much of a handful it can be, so I am leaning more toward 4, but we are "going with the flow" for the time being. I might be humming another tune in a few years though...

This exactly. We got lucky, we both wanted one boy and one girl and that's what we've got.... but I'm stretched as far as I can go. DH's max number was 3, which I was never on board with.

  • Originally we wanted 3 or 4. Now we have two and I don't want anymore. Dh though would like 1 more.
  • I would have liked 4. We will probably just have 2.

  • We've always planned on 2, maybe 3. However, the second I held my son in my arms after he was born, it was like something in my head could not accept that I was done. I've been desiring 1 more ever since. Out of curiosity, were you the middle child? What was the age gap between the oldest and youngest sibling?

  • I want 3 and H wants 2. We're going to see how #2 goes (since #1 is/was incredibly easy) and go from there.

  • If there were no other factors, I would say 4 or 5. I am 32. We just started ttc #2 last month but it took 14 months to get ku last time. If my dr feels it is safe for a third, we might try again.  I am the youngest of 4. My parents really spaced us out, my oldest sister is 13 years older than me.  I love having a big family.

  • Even though we had a very demanding first baby, we still want 4. I wouldn't mind a 5th oops baby. We are moving to be closer to family this spring, so it will be a bit easier for us the next time around. I'm just hoping that my age (31) won't be a problem for us.

  • I'd say 2-3, but we may just be one and done.  We keep going back and forth about adding #2 but are very, very content with DD.  I'd like multiple kids, but it would be difficult on just our one income and I really have no desire to experience childbirth again in the near future! And I'm almost 34.
